There is a 356 replica somewhere in my future.

Late to this topic. The short answer is yes. I've had my 997.1 2007 for 5 years and it is even more fun than I'd hoped. That said, this is my first year of Autocross. What I'm beginning to appreciate is that the car is very fast almost too fast for the street and overpowered for Autocross. Don't get me wrong, there is no replacement for displacement None the less I have a blast riding second seat in friends aircooled P cars and it feels like they are having more fun. The challenge of making a slower car go fast is enticing.

Honestly, if someone were to offer me a straight up trade for a fantastic aircooled for my equally awesome 997.1 I'd be hard pressed to say no.

There you go.

I have both a classic air-cooled 911 and a modern 2012 C2S (997.2). It is a great joy to have them both available to drive.

The differences are both dramatic and subtle. To many differences to address here.

The old 911 is totally "analog"; no electronic wizardry on those cars. The car is easy to work on if you are a home mechanic. When I lived in outside of Munich, my neighbor told me the 911 was a "VW on steroids". A bit of a simplistic analogy, but I got his point.

To drive the 911 near the limit on a road course is work! Those of you that have driven an old 911 on the track know what I am saying. I'll just leave it at that. The driving experience in a 911 can't be beat; you become connected to the car. The car "talks" to you with it's various sounds and handling feedback as you drive. The car gives notice when the rear-end has decided it no longer wants to stay behind you. I used to tell my DE students with old 911's..."don't lift" and "drive it through the corner under power". My 911 puts a smile on my face every time we go for a drive.

My 997.2 is another great car! It is larger, heavier and has gobs of power available. It has all the creature comforts I need...real heat & a/c, great stereo system, Navi, heated seats, power steering & brakes, comfortable electric seats, etc, etc. I have never driven it on a track or AutoX circuit, so I can not comment on that aspect of driving. It still has the rear engine handling characteristics of the classic 911; it just offers several electronic safety measures to prevent you from stuffing the rear end into a wall. It is a great car for cruising or just gliding through the twisties up in the Blue Ridge. A bit more complex to work on, but routine maintenance is very doable...IMO.

I love them both and have no plans to ever part company with them. If you have the space and financial resources...buy one of each. You will never regret it!

Totally concur. Not into museum pieces to be fondled and admired.
Past technology is just that. In a relatively short future, we'll all be driving something other than internal combustion cars that will be banned.
Bring the new tech on! Can't wait for the 911 Carrera GTSEV, 992 or 994.
The march of progress cant be stopped.

My first ever DE was at a BMW club track day. I’d owned a 911SC but brought a BMW 325i. One of the instructors gave me a ride around the track in his E46 M3. Lots of fun but the car felt large and heavy. Later that day another instructor gave me a ride in 911SC. Holy smokes what a blast, very different feel and lots more fun.

Years later when I finally took the 911SC to the track it made sense. Small and light, you don’t need 300 horsepower (as fun as it is).

2005 997.1 coupe & 1992 964 cab - quite happy. No interest in anything newer.
Often think of selling both for a 07 or 94 turbo but really don't need one.
Prolly invest about $30k at Flat6 when the daily hits 100k in 5 years for a new motor and suspension.
At the 1000 miles/yr I enjoy in the cab, it will likely outlast me.
Wifey gets a new handmedown from her parents every three years or so which works nicely for everything domestic.

I would love to get a 997.2 GTS after my 997.1 Carrera 2. The bigger plan is a 2015 991 GT3 or the new 991.2 GT3. Its good to dream!

my comments to a similar question about three years ago on rennlist:

I won't sell it, my wife will sell it (when she pulls the key from my cold dead hand).

Comparatively, air cooled cars require a bit more TLC than I really want to deal with... again, comparatively, but I've driven 993s and 964s the sound and feeling is one of a kind.
I wonder if you feel this way about he 991.2 GT3 for a specific reason. I feel this way every time a new model comes out.

I would say that I plan to keep my 997, either as a daily, maybe a track car in the future, or just another 911 to have. This could also be my one and only 3 pedal car. I am committed to owning a GT3 one day in the future. I would say that I would always shoot for the newer model, but then I would have a tough time deciding betwee older RS or newer standard GT3. As far as air cooled cars, I would like to get somewhat of a project that drivable, but needs some TLC.

Thinking the next for me will be a 6GT3 or 7GT3 to scratch the need of N/A power.

Great topic.

I have been trying to love the newer Pcars and have been warming up to a 997 or 991.1 GTS. I am still having trouble with the size. They seem to be so large compared to my 993. It is also vey hard to not love the 993 especially when closing the door. No other Pcar makes this sound. It is really hard to describe, but most of you probably know what I am talking about.

We recently bought a 2017 Macan GTS and we love it. It is hard to imagine a 911 with all the tecnhologies and comfort, but at the same time it is certainly a huge upgrade to my 20+ years old Pcar

I guess the only way to find out is to own one

I admire older cars. I really do. Have friends with all kind of Pcars. However, not being a collector and using my cars as DDs I go with newer gen cars. The only thing is it usually takes time to get used to some of newer designs. Electrification is certainly just around the corner. Not sure if I will ever like it enough to buy a Porsche without beloved flat 6 and MT

No plans to get rid of it now. My current DD I've had since new, coming up on 13 years. When it goes (170,000 miles on it. Though that's slowed down a lot since I drive the Porsche a lot during the summer), I'll be faced with the decision if I want to move my 997 into daily driving, or if I want to buy a mid engine (likely Boxster, but maybe Cayman) as the daily. With less than a year of ownership I know I want more. But it's hard to even imagine what that would be, we're kinda in a big life flux right now.
