It's time to replace my alternator. I planned to replace all my engine attachments this year (water pump, AOS, etc) and the alternator is conveniently testing low output. I cant seem to find a DIY. I ordered the alternator and called a couple indies who quoted me 1.5 hours of labor. Is it pretty straightforward? Remove airbox, belt, and pull a couple bolts?

Yes, it is pretty straight forward. Look at the 996 DIY write ups. There is a trick to getting the bottom right bolt out with a long piece of wood or rod to knock out the typically corroded sleeve holding it in. Use penetrating oil liberally.

I replaced mine this summer. It's not hard at all. I don't have an S but I think they are the same. Just remember to disconnect the battery first. Pretty much procedure just as you stated.
