Default 996tt 1st week of ownership

We'll, it's been a little over a week since I took ownership of my black on black 2001 996 turbo with now 65k miles and all I can say is wow! What a fun car. The amount of torque this thing has is incredible. On the freeway in 5th gear it will still throw you back alittle if you punch it. I am starting to figure out and get used to some of its quirks and have had to fix a few issues such as a punctured tire and destroyed windshield. It is a car that makes me actually want to drive every chance I get and I find myself constantly running it hard and taking it up to redline on a regular basis (from what I understand this is perfectly fine for these engines)
here's a list of some of the annoyances that most likely aren't really that big of a deal.

1. The oil pressure gauge appears to be inaccurate and the needle movement is very erratic.

2. It has a lightweight flywheel which sounds like a box of rocks being shaken from inside the car after its fully warmed up. Also can be heard throughout higher rpm ranges.

3. After the engine is fully warmed up there is an annoying fast rattle/ticking sound coming from the engine that seems to vanish if reved up ever so slightly. This noise isn't noticeable with a cold engine. Didn't notice this till a few days ago.

4. Seems to be a loose bushing in the front suspension, I'll have cantrells address this next week.

Oil pressure switch is easy to fix. It's just a spade connector so if it's jumping around most likely the contacts are bad. You can take the connector off and crimp it a bit and it should fix it 100%.

Good luck with the car.

Ok, I kinda suspected this or a failed sending unit. I'll give this a try first!

The IMS shaft rattles on these cars at idle when warmed up. Its normal. The key to it being the IMS shaft rattling is it goes away when reved! This is not to be mistaken for the M96 engine IMS issue which is not the engine in the turbo.

In my experience, the oil pressure gauge jumps around at idle, but is rock solid under load.

I've been reading up on the rattle, apparently there's no real fix for it. Just gotta ignore it I guess. Sounds like some owners started hearing it at very low mileage. I hate those kinds of noises, lol

the real ( non? ) issue and given the car is "new to you" is that you've got the *normal* ims "rattle" which has varying degrees of *severity* from one car to another. then couple this with the lwfw "chatter", which leaves you with a normally noticeable present amount of *chrattle* lol..

you'll get used to it. i quieted down my car significantly by switching to 5/50 or a blend of 50/50 5/40&5/50.

works for me but i have a dmfw and my ims is pretty quiet for an old twin turbo, i must say.

but yeah, we ALL hate those noises..

Welcome to the mix, and you're local.
Congrats, did you get the Black one at Cantrell?
I was amazed at how loud the LWFW was when I first drove it, sounded like a coffee can of rocks stuck under the console but has quieted down some.
I also switched to 5w-50 M1, worth trying next change.

Cantrell insisted this excessive flywheel chatter was perfectly normal. It really does sound awful. What deterred you from buying the car when you test drove it?

the best way to reconcile the added chatter of a lwfw is to remember that the faster it revs ( owing to the lwfw having less mass than the dmfw ) then the faster that chatter goes away lol

its actually called gear lash noise. but "chatter" suits me also reminds me of that oldie but goodie song. "clackety clack! ( don't clack back )"

Just drove mine for the first time today with a LWFW after my clutch install / coolant line welding. The noise on these cars is nothing compared to my VW GTI VR6 with a 6 lbs aluminum flywheel. Sounds like a gremlin river dancing in the transmission haha!

My oil pressure stays solid at just above 2 bars at idle and warmed up, doesnt jump. The only time it jumps is when cruising and you accelerate, it drops a finite amount at a certain rpm and comes back, this is due to the vario cam changing,

I've been reading that it is beneficial to run these cars on the hard side and shift on the higher rpm range. I find that it really comes alive in the higher range and have done some hard pulls and let it run out many times to 6k+ rpms before shifting. How do you guys drive your tts?

I was referring to my own car that has one too, the noise is really only at idle and low rpm. Cantrell is correct on the noise being normal. Colin knows his stuff and you're in good hands with them, they work on several local ones including my suspension set-up.

Had your car been for sale 2 years ago, I would probably be driving it.
If I remember right your car has k24's, JRZ's, Kevins tune, euro pipe, blk/blk etc.?
Was reasonably priced with quality upgrades and the right color.
