Default DIY Trunk Shelf

Hello!

I bought a 2001 996TT about a month ago and it didn't have shelf in the trunk, separating luggage (or whatever) from my tools at the bottom of the trunk. There are grooves for a shelf, so I assume there used to be one
(?). Anyways, as my first Rennlist post, I just wanted to share my little morning project. I built a nice little shelf out of 3/4" plywood. I think it looks nice, at least.

I've attached a "before" and two "afters." Sorry if the pics aren't so great.

I think Clint Hightower was selling something similar. Looks functional.

Welcome!

You might want to cover it with some black felt like a subwoofer box. It would look pretty much factory then.

Also, do you have measurements to share?

Thanks for posting. Would be great to see an intro thread from you with pics of your car.

sadly the bumps that hold that shelf up wont hold much weight. it is just meant to hold the shelf in place as it sits on top of the spare tire

Ditched the shelf & spare.
Added a can of fix a flat and my own tool kit. Already had AAA and a cell phone.
The spare is heavy and I rarely get that far from civilization in this car.

I put in 6-inch supports to hold the shelf and I can even stand on it (I'm pretty light, though). I don't have dimensions for the shelf since the corners have swooping curves that I just sanded to size. But if anyone needs, maybe I can trace the shelf onto a large piece of paper for you.

I like the raw wood look. If I cover it, it will be just another shelf. But if I stain it, it could be nice.

Just screw some cut 2x2s through the shelf, adjust with a Skilsaw in seconds.
The motor mount I made out of oak has eliminated lots of NVH.

2x2's or 1x2's should be fine also for the shelf.

I was considering teak for my trans mount though...lmao

Yeah, I just screwed in a 2x2 in the upper right corner (nearest to the driver), since that's where the shelf support is lacking (for some reason). If I didn't drive myself crazy about sanding it to 2000 grit, this would have been a 20-30 minute project, start to finish.
