Maybe the service records (or lack of) after the new engine install will help in the OP's decision.

Decided to pass on the 02 996tt. If I'd been a lot closer in distance I might have spent the money to fly out and drive it and inspect it in person. But I've been burned doing that in the past, so I'll stay with my mild mannered 996 cab and wait for something closer to home...maybe a 993 in the $35k range. And yes they are out there.

I wasn't worried because of the engine, I was looking for other opinions from turbo owners with more experience than me. It was the distance that finally made me pass. A 993 with a ton of miles and three thousand miles away would not be interesting to me. The same car in California would be worth looking at. There are cars that are junk no matter what the seller is asking, and there are cars that are rough cosmetically but strong mechanically that represent good drivers. My logic is that I only want to buy a car that I want to buy and at the price I am willing to pay.

maybe you might be better off looking for a *broken in* 997 turbo. i'd pass on any 993 that was 35k unless you're capable of rebuilding it as something would have to be "wrong". thats not where the market ( at least in sherman oaks ) is at..
but GL with your search..that's half the fun i guess....

Agree unless you have skills or a friend that works cheap a high mile 993 would be a pass even if 35k. Lots of nice cars to choose from in that price range. I passed on a nice 993 with 50k miles for 33k because it had a fender bender a few years ago= if only I had a crystal ball lol.

You have to follow your gut on these personal decisions, I can respect that.
I say you wait for a gt3 to pop up in your price range.....

High miles is not the issue on a well maintained Porsche. A very nice looking tip cab just went on BaT for just over $36k. A few days before an average coupe went for about $60k. Like stocks and fine art, there are people who can and will over pay and there are people who will take their time and let the item come to them at the price they want. Years ago I bought a 308 GTSi w/ 88k on the odometer for $27k. Sold it three years later with 124k on the clock for $25k. Car was in impeccable shape when I bought it and when I sold it. A great daily driver. I'm in no rush...the economy will bring me a car that I like at a price that I like.
