Did Porsche replace your 996TT engine?
I'm just curious - how many people on this distribution had their 996TT engine replaced by Porsche? I've heard of 2 so far other than my own, one of those for the exact same reason as mine (oil leak).

Oil leak. I was to lazy to fix it my self. The chain to case gasket was leaking and the case to cylinder liner was leaking. They never questioned pulling it down.

this raises a interesting question...
how many parts are recycled & reused? not to say that this is not good, but Porsche are surely not going to throw those engines away.
just a thought...

I'm not sure firsthand, but my dealer says that they take all of the swapped out engines and disassemble them by hand, examining each part and try to figure out what the problem was. After that is complete, I'm not sure what they do with them!

same thing was told by my service guy. first part was right... "after that is complete," some good parts do come back to another engine. that's just what i was told

I asked a similar question at the Zuffenhausen factory two weeks ago. They do tear down the returned engines to determine the root cause of the failure. They also know exactly which technician assembled which engine. So if there is any type of pattern that emerges they can correct it (through training, or whatever) w/ the person or parts supplier.
I did not ask what happens to the old parts, but I would be really surprised if they get anywhere near another production powerplant. Porsche has a significant R&D program, I would guess that they utilize the good used components for that.

my brother has a 2002 targa and his dealer swapped the engine, claiming that the parts were machined incorrectly. i've had no problems with oil leaks on my 2003 996 tt, except that it drinks a lot of oil!

I got mine replaced a few month after getting the car in 01. There was no oil leak, however, the oil pressure was building a bit slowly (2-3s too long) when starting the engine on a hot day.
I have sold the car since then as a tradein. The new engine did not matter at all. The only issue is the fact you have to suffer through break-in again.
