Update:

The shop has given the car an examination. After scoping the engine, coolant pipe fitting is in good condition, so tech doesn't recommend welding the coolant pipes at this time.

Front strut mounts are in good condition as well and show no signs of cracking, so my tech was not sure why prior PPI recommended replacing the front strut mounts.

Tech did find a crack in the coolant reservoir cap, which he suspected was causing the smell I've been smelling after driving the car and parking it in the garage.

Underneath the car tech saw quite a bit of East coast salt/grime/dirt he suggested I later get pressured wash at a detail shop later to avoid corrosion.

Otherwise, the car is in tip top shape. The shop is set on replacing the engine and tranny mounts, and replacing the water pump and coolant cap.

I'll confirm with the shop to take the car on a test drive to make sure the shifting issues has been resolved with the new mounts before deciding later on a getting a 997 shifter or SSK.

So far I'm pretty pleased with this shop. They seem honest, patient, and has not tried to up sell me on anything.

make certain do NOT get stock 997 shifter, it MUST be a 997 ssk or you'd be wasting your time. also. never a waste to r&r the trans and motor mounts, so you KNOW theyre '"new".

those three things done simultaneously will blow your mind. GL sounds like a fair knowledgeable shop. thats priceless otherwise they can KILL you $$$$ & stupidity.

In my case I wasn't seeking a shorter throw for reasons I think I've mentioned earlier.

What I was seeking was a new shifter as the stock one was busted and the tech recommended the 997 shifter. I don't know if it was the a 997 or a 997 Turbo shifter.

Whatever it was originally intended for once in my Turbo it provided a much more precise feel way better than the stock shifter ever had even from "new" (~10K miles).

It has remained its tight and precise feel and shift action probably over 100K miles.

Having the same issues with my shifter now and interested in your outcome. After replacing the clutch slave and accumulator my shifter does not felt smooth. First I thought it was a bad bleed, but first shop and a indy Pcar shop redid numerous times. Now I think it's the motor/tranny mounts or the shifter box. Please update once you driven for a while

Update again:

I got the call the service is now done. Tech test drove the car and transmission/shifts are rock solid and pristine, ready to go.

New engine mounts, new tranny mounts, new water pump, new coolant reservoir cap along with a bleed of the coolant system, and also new serpentine belt. Serpentine belt was replaced about 1 yr ago at major service by prior owner, so I found it odd a new serpentine belt was required this time around, as the tech found wear on the serpentine belt. This shop has seemed honest and straight forward with me so far, so I concurred with the replacement.

After I got off the phone, I did a quick search on rennlist. I suspect the cracked coolant reservoir cap and failing water pump may have contributed to the wear of the serpentine belt.

I'm picking up the car in 2 days and will report back with my feel of the car.

Will do. I should be able to find out literally within 2 minutes I drive the car off this Fri.

As I'm finding out, a good indy P-car shop is crucial to avoid being ripped off and in making sure your time and $$ is not being wasted.

This is my first Porsche (got it shipped about 1.5 weeks ago) and my first experience with Porsche service and my first experience with this indy P-car shop. A lot of firsts here!

Hoping I will not have to back for a long time until my next major service (aside from regular oil change, and perhaps a few mods like exhaust/shifter).

Since you're local, if you still think you're having shifting issues you can give mine a try to compare. It should be smooth going through the gears, nearly effortless once warmed up.

I did SS motor (wevo) & trans (tarret street performance) mounts after boning up here some right after getting my car. helped my shifting out a ton. also is prolly just a bit of me getting more used to the car after shifting a 915 for many years.

Cool, thanks for the offer! I'll keep this thread updated when I pick up the car tomorrow.

Now that spring is coming and weather is getting nicer, we should try and meet up sometimes. Have you ever attended Exotics at RTC? Porsche day is a big one.

we are local it would appear. if you get the motor mounts I could help you swap them out. takes about 30 minutes. will work for beer. the trans mount inserts don not require, but are a much easier when the car is on a lift.

hit me up if the motor mount project is something your interested. im in Sunnyvale.

I would totally take you up on that offer if I were local to you. Sounds like a great way to meet some up and learn about these machines. I'd do beer and bratwursts

Just a comment from a casual observer...to the OP...really appreciate the updates you have given to the thread. So often the OP doesn't do this. Much better thread when it goes to fruition. Thanks.

Might have to take you on your offer. Want to see the outcome from docboy before I order all the parts. I'm in Fremont and no lift. Before I moved here I made a offer on a house with a workshop and lift included. Missed out royally, .

@docboy, after every bleed and the clutch slave replacement, car drove fine for 5-10 miles, then shifter gets rougher to engage. Hope your fixes work so then I can have a plan to fix mine. I've got a PM from another member that done all the repairs you are doing, but still didn't fix.

No problem. This is a good Porsche community we have here.

I'll definitely post results tomorrow. That stinks if the other member you had a PM from did same repairs but with no avail. Makes me think if he has a bad gear box and/or shifter cables, or even synchros. Me hope that repairs I had done will solve the shifting issues..

whoops... I meant to offer the install services to America as he is local. let me know, really simple job. the trans mount could be done w/o a lift if you were to get the car up on four jackstands. if you were to lift just the back (which is fine for the motor mounts) the angle could create some problems lifting the transmission back into place. nothing that could not be over come with two people working at it, but the car level would be optimum.
