Auctions can be a tricky place to sell a car and usually you hear about the high and the low. The only reason you hear so much hype about pricing here is that there are a lot of people looking to get the Porsche Turbo name on the cheap. If you know anything this is nothing new and happens with most sports cars to some extent. Its far worse with a car of this complexity and part/repair cost as many will either do shoddy repairs or sell car quickly. Going by picture my gut says the blue 51k car is not that clean or well taken care of= but that's just a guess nothing more.
Inability to properly maintain and repair along with nature/wrecks will reduce the inventory of good ones. Expensive cars that can be had for 1/3 to 1/4 new cost will get you an interesting selection of quality/care/etc.
Known good ones are just hard to come by when something trades hands many times in 10 years and the stories increase, documentation fades, owners do and undo mods, etc.
Wish I would have bought my friends E60 M5 that was nice with lots of records/care last year...
If Gen3 IROC Camaros (they made a few) are selling for some of the asking on those, I'll stick with my "ugly" turbo.

I agree with both of you guys, the amount of well documented/maintained cars will continue to decrease over time. These are the cars that will always be on the higher end of the "sold" pricing.
What I find interesting is that just about all these cars are getting snapped up whenever they show up on the block. Seems there is at least an interest in them

Yeah, I'm not really a fan of body kits in general (although it looks well done on this car). I do like the wheels though. I'm wondering if it's genuine Tech Art body parts, if so they are $$$. Auction was no reserve so it could definitely have gone for less.

Interestingly, 2016 looks to be pretty slim pickings at the larger auction houses for 996T. I have been following and checking about once a week or so this year and not too many 996 Turbos to be found. I wonder why?? Perhaps more people are holding on to them? Seems like in 2015 and 2014 there was at least one at all the major auctions...hmmmm??
Anyway...Adding this one that sold in June @ Russo & Steele, sadly the listing is missing some key info:
6/2016 .... Russo & Steele
Lot 6304
2002 911 Turbo X50
Trans: Not Sure
Miles: Not Given
SOLD $47,300

There is a 2002 996TT 6speed coming up today on Mecum. A lot fewer 996T's in 2016 vs '14 and '15 at these larger auction houses. There are not too many details about the car listed at the Mecum webiste so it's hard to gauge what kind of specimen we'll be looking at but might be fun to watch. I'm guessing they will give some more when it comes on the block later today.
Car Auction starts today at 1PM if I understand correctly. It is lot # F199 so not sure exactly what time.
Here is link to the car: https://www.mecum.com/lots/CH1016-25...che-911-turbo/
You can watch the auction LIVE at: https://www.mecum.com/auctions/chicago-2016/live/
Also will be LIVE on TV on: NBC-SN

Just came up on the block a few minutes ago... No sale, did not reach reserve. Only got up to $29k
I was watching on TV and the live TV coverage ended about 3-4 cars before she rolled on the block..I was hoping it would make the TV coverage because then they usually give more details on the car and show video inside, etc.. Oh well.

Adding this car...
28th May 2016 - The Classic Race Aarhus Auction
2004 996 Turbo Cabriolet - 6speed - Black/Black - Obviously looks like an impeccable car with about 7,700 miles. I was pretty shocked at this selling price. $97,000 USD. There have actually been quite a few 996 Turbo selling in Europe for very strong money this past year. The highest I have seen in the past 3 years in USA was one that sold for $77,000 in 2014 at Russo & Steele - Scottsdale.
Anyway, here is the current 996 Turbo record holder with about $97,000 USD Selling price, notice of course that she is the ultimate color combination of Black on Black...lmao :

Here is the sheet from the auction house, they were actually estimating 90,000 to 100,000 Euro for the car ($100,000 - $110,000 USD):
