Steering Wheel Advice

I bought my 2001 996TT came with the carbon fiber steering wheel. The CF is cracked and I find the feeling of the cracks annoying.

The idea of spending thousands getting the CF repaired seems crazy.

What would you advise for the best bang for my buck?

Are you in the USA?

OEM CF wheels do occasionally come up on eBay. You also might want to try Porsche recycling specialist. If no luck with those two options you could always pick a nice OEM fully leather wrapped wheel on eBay for a couple of hundred bucks.

I would look for nice used stock leather wheel also.

I am in the US. I'll keep my eyes on eBay. Thanks

There is a shop in Texas that does a great job refurbishing the wheels. Give them a call and see what they can do. I forgot the name of the shop, but their work is very good. I'm sure you can find them here by using the search function.

Dallas custom steering wheel? They don't work with carbon fiber.

I had the same problem. Nice temp fix is to wrap in vinyl. Feels better, no cracks. I just sold mine on ebay for 500$. Picked up a GT3 wheel.

This is a nice Version of the GT3 thicker wheel...

I think the best bang for your buck in a replacement wheel is the atwie/raid 340mm ( smaller than the oem 380mm ) in any variety of finishes (leather/alcantara/ or any combo ). I got the leather/brushed aluminum from carnewal for 550 euro's: less than 800 usd and its the same as an fvd steering wheel. its by far the best wheel ( imo ) for the car.

My steering wheel has the same issue it started cracking about 2 years ago and it drives me nuts. I went to an auto upholstery shop in Scottsdale and the owner of the shop recommended not repairing the carbon fiber but instead recommended sanding down the carbon cracks sealing & painting it black with uv clear in piano finish so it won't crack again. The leather on my steering wheel is perfect so I think this is the route I plan on going with my car as for $300 cant beat it.

Check with Gert Carnewal in Belgium he has carbon and carbon with leather wheels for the 996 TT. I have one of his carbon/leather with paddles for my Tip car but he also has non Tip wheels. The CF on the wheel matches the CF in my 996 TT perfectly.

I have a RAID/RUF combo that is the cat's ass. But $. Great wheel.

I used DCS in Dallas to do the lid on my console. Great service, good communication and fast turn-around.

Gert Carnewal's wheel (that I bought) is RAID brand.

I concur (esp since the dollar to Euro is strong). I had a atiwe on my old 996 and it was one of the best mods I had. You basically are utilizing it every time you drive...best bang for buck!

ive had this one awhile. by far one of the better looking and functional things inside the car. i agree you get paid back every time you're hanging onto this wheel. its highly ergonomic too.

i just dont think people realize how well it suits the car, or exactly how little $580 euros is, compared to refurbing one like a dctm or something. 911uk even has em for 490 quid. i just wouldn't wanna be the recipient of anything with a declarable combustive airbag :nono: shipped from brussels right now or anywhere in the EU for that matter right now lol. thanks very much. whew.

No comment on the price but there's one for sale here
