996tt - Warm up & Cool down question ?

My dad advised me to drive off immediately after starting to avoid engine wear in the mid 70s, he had been doing it since the late 30s, nothing to do with modern circumstances. If you don't want wear on the engine, don't start it; if you want to keep wear to a minimum get the engine warm ASAP without stressing it.

Don't see how unless we're being overly pedantic
S'pose I could have said 'if you want to minimise wear' in the second statement which you quoted; in the first one I may have been being facetious.

Just going on what you write
I one wants to "avoid engine wear", and starting the car causes engine wear, then the actual answer is as you said "don't start it". But if you don't start it you can't easily drive off immediately.

unlike the other 'stuff' Porsche has been making in the last ~20years, the GT1/Mezger is near infinitely re-buildable(and tough to begin with), how many other street-used gas engines have replaceable liners?...go beat the hell out of them!

A lot of truth in the statements 993gt but the cost of a rebuild can be half value of the car. Most people would not or could not afford that=just an opinion. I believe there are going to be some sad people in the future when the day comes to pay the reaper. I know you have a different outlook and could care less about my opinion but I hate seeing what your doing to your GT2= such a rare/nice car out of the box.

exactly
oddly the 996TT tiptronic my dad just bought had a complete engine replacement a couple years ago due to timing chain failure...fully dealer serviced at recommended intervals, that tiptronic must have been responsible with those racecar shifts

993Gt I'm talking about your statement about removable cylinder liners etc- being able to rebuild these engines is of course possible but at a large cost. If you read the posts here and elsewhere you can read between the lines enough to tell that most cringe at everyday costs much less a rebuild. There are quite a few hard core guys with deep pockets that realize the cost of doing business but most do not.

I can understand your concern about rebuild cost, yes it can be substantial(particularly if paying someone else), but my point was the engines are engineered to be able to be infinitely rebuilt at a percentage of car value, while people are 'dumping' Carrera's, Boxster's Cayenne's etc due to total engine failure of cost magnitudes greater than the car's total value. What triggered me was your earlier statement made judgement towards how my car is treated, you can trust I am one of the most OCD and 'preaching' guys when it comes to maintenance and care, and is why I repair more Porsche's than just my own...drive them as designed, maintain beyond required; enjoy.
