As per the title I have a 993 C2 that I've owned for the last six years and love it. It's got a few mods, sounds good and still puts a smile on my face but as you are probably all aware they are quite sort after at the moment and I have had someone approach me to see if I would sell it.

I'd only sell it for another 911 and if I had my pick probably a GT3 but in New Zealand there are not many for sale and any good ones would probably be out of my budget. However I could probably get enough for my 993 to buy a nice manual 996TT outright.

So have any of you gone from a 993 to a 996TT and if so did you regret it, what did you miss etc etc.

This is my second 993 and previously I've had a 964 Turbo, 911S and a 944S2 so I've had seat time in a few varieties. I guess the attraction of the 996TT is the performance. I'll admit the 996 front isn't my favourite 911 front and I'm not sold on the interior

Keep the 993 and save towards a 996TT. The prices on the 993 keep going up. I do not think the 996TT prices will increase in the new future.

Financial considerations aside, I have absolutely no regrets moving from my 993 C2S to the 996TT. The power differential is undeniably huge. The exterior and interior looks is debatable for many but for me the interior is a vast improvement and I absolutely love the exterior. Good luck with your decision.

Not that my 996TT is not goed or for value increase reason of the 993. Matter of fact I modded with k16/24 tutbos, Europipe and UMW tune but still I mis my nimble aircooled 993 so now Im looking for a 993 again!

Save up if necessary and do both - but definitely do not sell the 993.
Yes as mentioned, The power differential is undeniably huge. but the 993 has stood the test of time magnificently - it's THE keeper.

Not consecutively, but I had a 95 C2 and a 97 C2S and now have an 02 Turbo.

Driving dynamics, there's no contest. Esthetics? I sure love the old style, but of all the 996 variants, the Turbo is the handsomest, IMO.

Yup,
highly modded 1995 C2 cab. lightweight. Sold it for a evoms stage 3 996 tt.
Love the tt-it does everything well and will smoke the 993 to oblivion.
Can drive t everyday.

i miss the living sh*t outa my c2 993. much as i love this medium modded 600rwhp car. totally different animals. but that little 275bhp a/c car was a freakin blast! i would never have sold it had i known how much id miss it. i didn't need the money. idiot.

Don't be so hard on your self Mark, I bet if you drove the 993 today it would change the way you think.
Its like memories of an old girlfriend, always seemed better then but much different if revisited now and makes you realize why it didn't last the 1st time.

To add my experience.

I had a 993. '95 C2. Had it for 4 years. Stolen in Dec 2014.

With the insurance payout, I bought an '02 996 TT x50 in Jan 2015.

The 996 TT is the better car in just about every single way (other than the look of the headlights), but I really, really miss my 993. But if you were to ask me why - it's not the 993 model as a whole, but my specific 993, as there were so many great memories associated with it.

In other words, if my old 993 reappeared today in a similar condition as the day it got stolen - I would probably trade my 996tt for it. Any other 993, probably not.

What I've told friends is this: the 996tt feels like "new car that is old" whereas a 993 feels like "a classic car" if that makes sense.

Or to put it another way, the 996tt feels like a middle aged person that was once young, whereas a 993 feels like an old person that is proud to be old. Who knows, that may change in 10 years when the 996tt becomes more of a classic? With the rise in 993 prices, even the 964s are seeing a bump now that they never saw before.

Driving the 996tt just feels like it's a modern car: the A/C is a *real* modern A/C (the A/C in the 993 feels like it's trying its absolute hardest to keep you cool, whereas in the 996tt the effortless A/C feels like any modern car), the windshield is more angled like most modern cars, there's a "warp drive" feel to the turbos you don't get in the 993 (and the 993tt does feel a lot more raw than the 996tt at least in my experience), and so forth. It feels super fast in an even more effortless way than the 993 - and that's by design I guess. Some say the interiors feel dated - but it's dated in a way where it still feels like at that time in the early 2000s it was trying to be a modern car. The 993 interior on the other hand feels like you're in a classic car that hasn't changed much since it's original incarnation. I guess you feel a more direct attachment to the lineage of the original 911 in the 993 than the 996tt.

Don't get me wrong I'm really happy with my 996tt and it goes crazy fast, but I miss my 993 C2 dearly. If you are a performance freak, then the 996tt is a no brainer and from the forums there seems to be a ton of mods you can do to turn it into some insane machine. I guess it's sort of like this: if you could only choose one, would you rather have the Jaguar E-type, or a McLaren P1? '60s Shelby Cobra vs Bugatti Veyron? Driving experience/heritage vs. pure performance. Obviously not as big a diff between the 996tt and the 993, but you get the feel.

If you were to get a 996tt, in terms of aesthetics, I found that the black interiors to my eye tend to feel the least dated (and some may even love it) - and on the other end of the spectrum I found the light gray interiors seem to feel the most dated for some reason (no offense to those owners with that color).

ha jim, i keep cars a lot longer than girlfriends and rarely miss them for long owing to the frequency of replacement! but your thought is well taken. but pound for pound, i miss that ol 993 more than any i've ever dumped. i mean i still recall the thump of the door closing! as if it could float, and y'all know what i mean.

shades of its vw heritage i suppose. but i really wanted to grab one again recently, dont really have the room for it, and saw that clean examples are pushing 50/60k! and now ya know, they're never gonna be "reasonable" again.

while my smokingly perfectly ( running at least lol ) 996tt is worth maybe 30? LOL. somethings wrong with the world today

A lot were made, but the Mezger engined hero models (GT2, GT3, Turbo) are a good pick to appreciate in 5 to 10 years when the playstation generation hit their stride.

Yep, I picked the new shape precisely because I remember how shockingly awesome it looked when it came out, and because the interior looked like someone had spent more than a few minutes thinking about it (though the row of centre console buttons hidden behind the steering wheel is a bit silly, especially on right hand drive cars).

I totally understand this, they are very different cars. I still miss my old '79 928 - including the solid thunk of the door.

Great way of putting it. I am that performance freak and it has never disappointed me in 5 years of ownership (well OK, just when the silly glued in coolant fittings let go on track days - but they're pinned in place now). Still in love to the point that when someone wanted to buy my car I didn't even bother coming up with a price.

Fair call, though Metropol blue (think almost midnight blue) ages nicely too and feels a little airier.

I love the 'Le Mans' racer for the road swept back styling of the 996 Turbo, headlights included. And I love the 500 odd horses a tune delivers on fast spooling K16s. Mines an almost 14 year old car now, but the only time I've really felt it was outclassed is when I went to check out a McLaren P1. It will still despatch new $150k+ cars on track, all day and half the night.

It is fair to say though that Porsche made fuel economy too much of a priority for the Tiptronic version of the 996T so it needs to be driven hard to show its best side, ideally with PSM off. And then it's epic, but a slow and quiet test drive will always disappoint. Setting front toe to neutral or even a mm or two outwards also makes a huge difference in livening one up. As does a tune based power lift.

Maybe I've just been obsessing over the long hoods too much recently, however, I feel the hood on the 993 looks too short. The edge of the hood would look so much better if it lined up with the lower edge of the fenders.
