Default "Thud" noise after clutch-in below 3k RPMs in 1st and 2nd gear

Hello all. I've had my turbo for about 3 weeks now ('02, 28k miles) and I'm not new to driving stick, either, but this is my first stick-shift car that isn't a beater.

Anyhow, when shifting up below 3k RPMs in low gears, if I lift off the gas without waiting a beat or two before pushing the clutch in, there's kind of a thud (maybe even a lurch). But if I wait after lifting off the gas, this doesn't happen. Also, if I shift comfortably above 3k, I don't have to wait before clutching.

Is this an issue of technique?

I haven't.

I'm guessing this is what I'd be looking for? Only have to pull some covers to see the state of the rubber?

I agree with Dock lead with the clutch but yes that would be where to look.

Technique issue.

Lifting of the gas should be concurrent with pushing the pedal in so the car doesn't loose any forward momentum from the lifting of the gas nor does the engine revs rise as the clutch pedal is pushed in with the gas still applied.

Your technique might be highlighting a tranny/engine mount issue -- though unlikely given the car's low miles -- or you might just be encountering some of the usual drive train play. If I fumble the clutch/gas pedal I can once in a while elicit a small "clunk" from the car which is just the play in the drivetrain.

Smoothness and concurrency with the gas pedal and clutch has the car accelerating with no clunks or other drama and with minimal interruption in acceleration. It also prolongs clutch life.

my most oft used clutch maneuver in *this* car is clutch out ever so slowly allowing engine speed ( 750/800 idle) to supply just enough forward momentum so as to eliminate the need to feather the throttle or clutch at all. in other words, i simply ( albeit slowly ) disengage the clutch slowly from a standing star.t without ever needing add'l throttle/clutch combination. just let it out slowly, don't *drop it* and go

excepting a hill or incline of course ha. in which case jack be nimble jack be quick.. on the clutch LOL

I may be wrong, but I think the onager is talking about up shifts (car already moving).

I'm leading in with the clutch now and it's much smoother. Thanks for the advice guys. I guess driving 100HP beaters your whole life doesn't teach you much about driving!

I'm sure Mr. Mezger sheds a tear every time any of us shift this way

i'm guessing that hans had very little to do with the hydraulically assisted clutch mechanism that made it into this car. we rarely have problems with the motor! the clutch on the other hand ( err, foot ) though is another story...lol
