I still can't believe Porsche, the NHTSA, or whatever other oversight organization, has not stepped in to take car of this problem. Even with early indications, Porsche went on to produce cars into the late 2000s that still had this problem.

Even if the catastrophic coolant loss is not an immediate safety issue for the affected car as the NHTSA has ruled, the fact that it dumps litres of slick pentosin on the roadway surely has to be.

Heck, I got a recall for a lame wiper issue on my Toyota.

ducnine, it's not even age or miles, as there's plenty of low mileage examples affected. Though with the passing of time, it sure seems to afflict an even larger number of vehicles.

The NHTSA did step in and investigate. I'm sure you know what their findings were.

uh, that would be coolant, not power steering fluid...

an honest if not a bit critical distinction, and only "possible* error, particularly given how few use pentosin coolant and that it WAS coolant that puked out the fitting(s) or exp tank?, and not hydraulic fluid. the vast majority of which we all use, if not ALL (?!), is in fact pentosin

I believe it was just a typo and I'm sure he meant anti-freeze. I would have it done if motor out repair was needed but otherwise no. I still believe % wise its a low occurrence. That said I can see why people do it when they have cars heavily modded and or track.

Pentosin seems to be synonymous for hydraulic fluid around these forums but Pentosin is a brand name. For example I've got a bottle of Pentosin Super Dot 4 Brake Fluid sitting in my garage and they do make coolant as has been pointed out.

I had mine blow out at 73,000 miles.
Had mine repaired at GMG.
Their suggested repair is to drop the engine and weld (not pin) the coolant pipes into position. It is the only way to permanently fix the problem.

It is just one of those "it will happen" items to take care of.

Just FYI, I ended up having mine pinned at Sharkwerks, and it was worth the wait. Had a bunch of "while you're in there" items done, while the engine was out. Including an EVOMS tune. :-)

exactly, when i went to rebleed my spoiler it sure looked like pentosin to me, and was. and although its been said not to use it because of its corrosive quality to rubber. porsche recommends pentosin ch11s in their own wing rebleed "how to".

i think for whatever reasons, pentosin is a brand that higher end german cars use. this i found when i stopped by the bmw dealership nearest me when i needed a can quickly and they make brake fluids as you say. it could be similar to the debate against using the necessity of using porsche branded coolant when in fact audi/vw g13 is the same. but then, perhaps pentosin DOES have some special additives, but i'd be surprised if it were *much* different if at all, from most any "decent" branded and "properly "spec'd" hyd fluid ( designated ) for our cars. i realize all fluids are not the same, but all fluids with the same numbers e.g. "api" for motor oils, should be safely similar. one would think(?!)

I've always used Don Wise in Campbell for the last 20 years. Very trustworthy and knows his Porsche.
