Q: Oil smoke @ start??
Hi to all...
My TT has ~12k miles on it, and was broken in carefully, per manual, etc.
A couple of weeks ago, I noticed that when I start it up, it is spewing oil smoke like nobody's business -- I mean, it looks like I'm driving a 60's-vintage Mercedes diesel! Yuck!
I can only see the smoke in the garage (white smoke + sunlight = invisible), but I *think* it only happens on cold starts.
It went to Bauer, who confirmed the problem, didn't find anything easy to fix, and suggested the car go to the dealer service department. Double yuck.
OK, now the service guys say they can't even see any unusual behavior. They are still checking. Triple yuck.
So, now I'm hunting for ideas -- any of you folks seen behavior like this? Got any suggestions for what to look for?
TIA.

I've seen this happen before on both stock and modified 996TTs. I've been told that many of them (maybe even all) do this occasionally and that it is nothing to worry about. No one seems to know the exact cause, however.

I think they do it all the time - the smoke is so dense though that most of the time if you are in the car you wont see it as it stays low to the ground...Next time start your car and stand behind it

There have been threads on this before. It appears to be normal, because many people have reported this happening and dealers do not appear to be concerned about it.

Due to flat 6 design, when the vehicle is turned off some residual oil sit will sit in the cylinders. Most motors will have gravity on their side and the oil will eventually fall back to the pan.
When Porsche's are re-started it will push out the oil and therefore create some smoke.
Nothing to worry about.

Mine does it almost every time. As stated above I have heard that exact explanation. With turbo charged cars, the air gets built up inside and releases when car started.

A much discussed issue. I've owned three turbo 996's - all have put out a smoke puff at one time or another, but it was far more common with my first TT. As a point of interest, I never had this happen with any of the three 3.4 liter 996's I owned.
Bottom line - I'm very surprised you didn't see this before 14,000 miles. Don't sweat it.

Smoke on ignition
Glad to hear this. I have not noticed this on prior cars. Just got a new GT2 last week and saw it yesterday. Thanks for the explanations.

I get the same thing ever once & a while. Seems to be if the car has sat for a couple of days (I think). My dealer warned me of this the day I picked the car up for delivery.
