In MA we have Yearly excise tax that is $25 per $1000 of what the state values the car to be!! Real expensive the first 2-3 years (not sure what depreciation method they use...)

You guys are just totally messing w/ our non-Californian heads now, right? It's one thing to try and honestly dissuade the rest of us from coming out there and getting wood driving on those beautiful, twisting mountain and coastal roads of yours, but it's totally underhanded to try and feed us the impossible notion of paying in excess of $3k for annual vehicle registration!! You are kidding, aren't you? That's heinous.

I think that annual registration here in FL is under $100, even w/ vanity and specialty tags. My insurance (w/ State Farm no less) will be about $1300/yr ($500 collision, 7k miles/yr) once the new TT arrives.

What's the law regarding driving, say, a Florida registered car in LA?? If there isn't a jail term pending, why not register the car's out of state? Sounds like a good excuse for a cross country drive (to do the paperwork) too!

If it was me, I'd move mountains to avoid this fee!!

FYI UK road tax (as it is called here) is £180-ish per year. Cars registered pre 1974 are free.

GA is also every year. My TT was 1,300 last year. They also schedule the renewals so that all of your cars hit on your B-day

Thumbs down I've got you all beat!

Recently paid a $4500+ PROPERTY TAX bill on my '02 Turbo! Keep in mind that is an annual tax, although it does decrease each year (but not much!).

Don't move to Connecticut!!

And I was just about to ship my TT over from Hawaii! The reg fee for my TT last year in Hawaii was about $150. Not as cheap as those in Florida, but much better than California.

The car I'm driving in California, a 745Li was $560 DMV fees...so next year, I'm looking at $1500+ next year. Argg...I wish I could register in Hawaii, but they have this stupid safety check thing in Hawaii that needs to be presented when registering.

Does anyone know a site where you can find out which crooks (oops...state reps) voted on this bill? Better yet, who the heck introduced this bill...

I better be getting some nice paved roads or fix up the 405 for the money I'm paying!!!

Chris,

"Does anyone know a site where you can find out which crooks (oops...state reps) voted on this bill? Better yet, who the heck introduced this bill... "

The sad thing is this tax increase went through WITHOUT a vote or discussions in the State assemblies nor senate. Grey just told his budget director that we are in a crisis stage, and the tax tripled overnight. Evidently, when they lowerd the registration fee (read: tax) over the last three years, they had a provision that says if the state needs money, the fee can go back to it's peak level, which is THREE times last years amounts.

Here's the real kicker on why we have such a severe state budget shortfall: According to a three-part series I read in our local papers, California's public employee head-count went up by 38% between 1999 and 2002. That's right, that's when the state was rolling in dough. Now why would our governor permit such massive state employments? All state employees are unionized, and uniformly vote democratic tickets. Wonder why the democrats won ALL state elected offices in 2002? Grey basically bought his re-election and general democratic candidate support with a massive infusion of 'captured' voters. Now that the well is dry, the payroll/deficit is still there, and we are paying for this debacle with our car registrations.

As severe as the budget 'cuts' are, we are still ahead of the 1999/2000 level. That's what I call the theory of 'relativity'.

Yeah...that explains that union that came out telling other dems that if they entered the election, they would lose union support in future elections.

Now it looks like Grey wants to drop the registration fee hike due to his unpopularity!
