I've got the upgraded Bose system in my car--and the amplifier seems to have blown - my dealer said they are stupid-expensive to replace, so I am looking for a used but working one. Anyone got a lead on picking one up?

Search Porsche Bose Amplifier 996 on eBay. Found at least one, no affiliation.

I've got a perfectly working one out of my '03 with upgraded BOSE that was taken out for a full ground up aftermarket system.

Could just be a fuse on the amp...

Correct, most likely a fuse as most amps have an overload shut off.
You can definitely smell the amp when it has blown....
