$200 996 Carrera Fan = $500 996 Turbo Fan
The Carrera/Boxster radiator fan bolts in and works just fine and it's less than half the price of the 996 Turbo radiator fan. In my opinion it's of = or greater quality.
The 996 Carrera fan is Bosch PN 0 130 303 233
The 996 Turbo fan is Porsche PN 9966241270

I found this out because a vendor (I won't name) charged me for the 996 turbo part and shipped the 996 Carrera/Boxster fan by mistake. When the fans arrived I noted the ballast (lo-speed) resistor was different but concluded it was because the fan was mfg. by Bosch as opposed to the original Gate brand fans I'm replacing. I didn't realize it was the incorrect part until I got curious and checked the part number after the fans were installed (took a phone pic of the fan).
The Carrera fan bolted into the shroud just fine and the electrical plug mated with that of the turbo's harness. The fan runs just fine too, and I now have AC again when sitting still.
When I was shopping for radiator fans I noted the 996 Carrera fans looked similar to the 996 Turbo but couldn't find any information/specification to use as a reference in determining if the 996 Carrera part would fit the Turbo.
In the end I am getting a price adjustment for the difference as I'm not tearing the fans out again.

Just thought you guys would want to know there is no sense spending over 2X as much for a Turbo fan when the Carrera fan will work. My car lived in hot environments it's entire life and both radiator fans gave up within a week of each other. The car did not overheat whatsoever (mid 80's ) but I noticed the AC would go warm when sitting at stop lights etc. The radiator fans on the 996TT are not serviceable, nor are the Carrera fans for that matter, but I did tear one apart just to see how they are designed.
They are a stamped sheet metal case with end caps/bearings held on by tabs bent over on each end. The motor is a 4-brush/pole type motor, all but a 1/16" of what started as 5/8" brushes had been consumed on mine and the commutator was severely worn. Even if the brushes could be replaced, putting the stamped motor case back together would pose a problem unless the utmost care was used in disassembly.

great info Ben! thanks for posting.
Even though I have no cooling issues, I have been thinking about adding an additional fan to my car(GT2's from factory only have a passenger side fan, despite still having wiring for the empty driver's side)...this makes it a lot cheaper..

The turbo fans have 3 speeds, the carreras are only 2 speed. I’m not sure how it’s handled layout wise, I’d be interested in seeing the pictures. Thanks for sharing either way.

Yeah, if you are really concerned about having an "intermediate" stage, just pull the ballast resistor from the turbo fan. The 2nd tap on the resistor is what gives you the additional stage, nothing to do with the fan itself.
