My 04 TT gets me 17.3 avg for in town driving. The very best I could do highway was 22.3 @ 73 mph. Go up to 80 mph, drops to 21.8 mpg.

My 07 Z06 with 7.0L 505 hp gets 27.2 mpg @ 80 mph(1750 rpm), 16.9 mpg @ in town driving.

I was disappointed with the Porsche's mpg, thought it would better the low technology Vette.

My 67 GTO gets 8.5 mpg in town, 11 mpg highway, makes oil company execs send me thank you notes & Xmas cards.

Really the only reason the Z06 gets such high gas mileage on the highway is the huge overdrive 6th gear which makes the engine run under 2k RPMs at highway speeds. If you could replace the 6th gear on a 996TT with a lower ratio, you would achieve similar results.

My Europipe really comes alive above ~3500 RPM, so sometimes I cruise in 5th gear on the Interstate just to enjoy the sound. In these cases my gas mileage takes a hit versus cruising in 6th. If I were concerned about gas mileage I wouldn't have bought my Turbo.

Some may want their cars to be more than just one-trick ponies (more so if they are daily drivers), but you are definitely correct that gas mileage is further down the priority list than other traits in a car such as this. I was just pointing out that the difference in gas mileage between a Z06 and a 996TT is nothing to do with technology but just several metal teeth on a single gear smaller than the size of an average human hand. I just know that the 996TT gets better gas mileage than my 500hp supercharged 928 did in city driving, so that's alright with me . I do miss the instant 300rwtq @ 1,500RPM though.

I just can't complain, 26.4mpg at 80mph and the performance too!

I agree with you.

From my point of view, if gas mileage is important to a potential sports car buyer, then that would be something they would research prior to buying a 996 Turbo. It's not like there isn't any good information out there regarding the Turbo's gas mileage.

I'm sure I looked at the Turbo's advertised gas mileage numbers (although I can't really remember looking; its been too many years), but certainly in my case there were many other far more important considerations besides gas mileage.

Regarding the Vette, its gas mileage numbers would never be a factor that would lean me towards owning the car. And just like its 6th gear gas mileage numbers, the Vette's interior storage space is a commonly touted positive aspect of the car. And just like my personal opinion regarding gas mileage specifics in a sports car, interior storage space carries little to no consideration in determining what sports car I buy. In fact, if the ability to carry things had been an important consideration for me when I was deciding what sports car to buy, the 911 series would have come out on top in this category because of Porsche's Roof transport System.
