Default 997 shifter in a 2001 996 Turbo?

Hey everyone,

I'm new to the 996 turbo universe and so far I am loving it. I came out of a 1990 964 which I owned from 2001 through 2005 and then a 997 2S which I owned from 2007 through 2010.

Anyway, when I owned the 997s I changed the shifter out for a short shifter. I kept the original 997s shifter. I've read in a few places that the 997 shifter can be installed in the 996 Turbo. I've noticed that 996 Turbo whilst light is prone to the occasional mis-change. Fortunately I've only gone from 2nd to 5th but I'd hate that to be the other way around. So here's my questions:-

1. Will the 997s standard shifter work in a 2001 Turbo?
2. Is there anything specifically I should be careful about in the installation. I installed the short shifter in the 997 and found it fine.
3. Do you all agree it is an improvement over the 996 Turbo shifter?

Thanks all,
Andy

1. Yes
2. Nope, same installation process.
3. Yes a definite improvement but a 997 GT3 shifter or 997 SSK might be more to your liking.

I had the standard 997 shifter installed in my 996TT, and to be honest, I feel like I wasted $150 on the shifter and $200 on the install. I can barely tell the difference and was hoping for a much better feel. If I could do it over I'd go 997 ssk or the GT3 setup.

It's been discussed in this forum many many times and IIRC, Kevin had a group buy not too long ago?

Do the 997 GT3 shifter or the Numeric Shifter and you will be fine. Both are high quality units that are an improvement over stock.

ALL,

Thanks for your advice. I installed the standard 997 shifter I had from the previous car. It took about an hour (and I was moving very carefully). The difference is very compelling in my opinion. The shift feels shorter, the gear change insignificantly more decisive, the 'sloppiness' is gone and I no longer feel worried about a missed shift.

Ok. That's the first performance mod out the way. I guess I just got on the slippery slope

The base 997 shifter is about 10 -12% shorter than a std 996 shifter.

++1. Had my Numeric shifter installed two weeks ago. Went for a track day this past weekend. Pure shifting joy.

Well put! I was shocked this fine piece of machinery came with such a sloppy and loose shifter. The first time I drove my turbo, all I was thinking is this thing is stupid fast but the shifts arent precise at all.

I did the 997 shifter and it transformed the entire driving experience. Suncoast has them pretty cheap or maybe one of the other vendors on here can give you a deal.
