Default 195mph/313kmh on autobahn...road trip to Germany (video of Garmin GPS)

Hello guys

I just got back from road trip to Nürburgring. The ring was wet and slippery and this time did not provide enjoyable driving. However, autobahn A1 did. Very little traffic this time and no construction work.

My friend snapped a picture of Garmin GPS showing 313kmh (195mph). I exceeded 300kmh many times... as safely as it can be done, legally on a public road. The speedometer showed 326 kmh.

996 turbo is a fast car. UMW tune is the only performace mod I have.

I am happy with the car and with the fact that I am able to take it to Germany every now and then.

Getting up there! As long as the rest of the Turbo components can take it and you get a cool down period. Certain areas of the "bahn allow you to maintain high speeds for extended periods ( more than 2-5 minutes). You must be prepared to read the traffic and signs ahead when it is mandatory to slow down. And please don't let an animal or idiot driver cut you off.

stay in your safe zone.

I am surprised positively about the traffic culture in Germany. Less restrictions seem to mean less idiots on the road. They give way when you signal. They continuously observe rear mirrors. They leave the left lane for people going fast.

When free speed zone begins you can trust the road is smooth to drive fast. They put a sign to warn even about the smallest bumps. You can travel ridiculous daily mileages there. 100 - 120 mph is a very safe cruising speed on autobahn.

You get RON100 pump gas from any Shell station. 25 miles per gallon on a 1800 mile trip. My previous car 996 C2 did 20 miles per gallon on a similar trip a couple of years ago.

Germany is loaded with old beautiful castles.

Dock its Burrensheim castle. Funny thing about castles is that from a different angle they may look like a completely different castle. Very few of them are symmetrical.

The larger one above surrounded by water is Shcwering castle.

Yes, and of course many were built in the same general style.

The Eltz castle would have been a bit off the path for you, but because the picture looked so much like Eltz, I thought I'd ask.

Thanks for the information and the great pictures.

Funny you should bring that castle up Dock ! I went there in 2006 when my wife and I did the ring. (although I drove an E class Diesel )
My autobahn speed max was ~145mph in the rental.

It's a small world.

That castle is a bit off the beaten path. My wife, daughter and I visited Eltz in 1991.

I spent time in Europe back in the 80's when I was in the Air Force; spent many evenings screaming along the Autobahn wide open driving a friends 930, followed by maxing out the car on the curvy roads of the Hunsruck.
