I can't recall 100% but I believe that I got the ABS/PSM fail from a bad MAF with no CEL. I was on the track at the time, and as I found out at the next brake point - ABS really did fail.........

Are you sure it's not a wheel speed sensor?. That once set off my ABS fault code.

could be. i plan on going to another shop for a second opinion. i'll have that along with the vacuum lines checked. the ABS fault code shows up once i step on the brake and the car is still parked.

Isn't there a brake pedal sensor that also can go bad.

update... took the car to another shop, had it hooked to the computer and revealed a "pressure sensor" issue. the problem has something to do with the brakes and it may very well be the abs pump. the shop owner was optimistic that the abs sensor can be ordered separately from from the actual abs pump.

i set up another appointment to have further diagnostics done. today's visit was a quick one but to my surpise... free! everyone else charges $100/hr. porsche charges $155/hr.

i told the shop owner i'll take my chances with a used abs pump. a used one goes for $500 and labor is about $500 (at most) and a new abs pump around $3000 so if the used one fails, i could always have two more used ones installed to equal the price of a new pump.

that's what i would do. good to have that 2nd opinon! ya dodged a bullet. i can't tell you how many used parts i use at any opportunity. i can't imagine the new ( used ) CUPholder i just put in won't outast the rest of the car. abs pump, same. GL.

NYC - what was the outcome. Did the used pump fix the problem?

I'm having an ABS issue too. No warning light, but when I am driving slowly and make a hard left turn - like turning into my driveway - the ABS pump starts going off - I think it must be a problem with the speed sensor or the ABS wiring harness on one of the front wheels. The sheatihing around the ABS wiring harness in the wheel well has all rotted and fallen off, but not sure if that is part of the problem.

Anybody else heard of this problem?

yes. i've had it and avoid it by not hard locking the steering at a wierd angle. which is what caused the abs/psm cel. i'm sure it was a wire was crimping, as it doesn't happen any more.

the heat shield for the sensor is a snap on piece. You should get a fault code for bad sensor.

I have had two separate ABS problems on my 2001 996 TT.

1. The ABS pump sprang a leak. Symptom was a low fluid level warning, then diagnosed by a visual inspection. Replaced it with a second hand one from Germany. Far more economical than getting a new one.

2. Symptom was multiple ABS/PSM warnings when turning sharply at slow speed. Fault showed up as implausible wheel sensor output on tester. Fault is caused by crimp in wiring harness at the sensor end i.e. a broken wire in the harness. Fix is to buy a harness repair kit and fit. Not expensive.
