Hi all. I've been a long time Rennlist member and 993 owner for almost 10 years and love everything about the car. I'm looking at picking up a 996 turbo. My question to you fine folks is about the regular Turbo vs the X50 package. Besides the larger turbos (K24 450 vs K18 420) what else are the upgrades? I'm going to add performance parts also so I'm assuming the larger turbos will lend to additional power.
Also, please direct me to any reputable 996 upgrade website. Very much appreciated. I look forward to spending more time on this side of the forum.

I have driven a stock 996 TT and own a 996 TT x50 (also for sale if you are interested). The X50 in stock form definitely pulls harder and stronger than the non X50 cars but there is a slight delay. I personally like the X50 power better but I may be biased. Kevin at Ultimate appears to be the best guy for power upgrades based on what I have read. I am under CPO until 2014 so was waiting to make changes but everyone sings his praises. With the X50 you get slightly larger intercoolers, different ECU mapping and some beefed up transmission bits from what I have read.

Well it really depends on how much upgrading you plan on doing. If you're not intending to upgrade your turbos then perhaps the X50 has more to offer. Most folks say that if you're going beyond the basic upgrades of a flash and exhaust then paying a premium for the X50 doesn't give you the return. The stock K16's will have less lag and spool sooner which might make the car a tad quicker at the lower end but the K24's kick in and take over in the mid - upper range and will pull the K16 car, stock for stock.
I think so much of this stuff is academic unless you're going to the track or just a plain stupid driver as these cars are so quick and fast you really can't utilize the increased power that upgrades give but for a few moments/seconds of time anyway.
Good luck on crossing over. I came from a 993 C2S and don't regret the more at all.

996 turbo X50 or turbo S has bigger turbo so a bit more lag...but some forgemotorsport actuators , remap+exhaust can reduce that a lot.
The X50 will be a bit stronger as it has stronger gearbox. I/C are bigger but not brillant. I heard the X50 has uprated oil pump but I am not sure about that.
Be aware of the pccb ...they are rubbish , the rotors are crap but not the calipers as they are 6 pots on the front and 4 at the back they hold 350mm disc all around and with really good steel discs they are very powerfull !!
With a stock 996tt you start to get torque lower in the rev band compare to a X50. The top end is much stronger on the X50 .
In a real world a 996 TT is good enough , if you want a little extra go for the X50.
They are getting on a bit now so take the time to buy a good one , get it on a ramp and checked by a specialist, get a pressure test done as well it is quite common to have a boost leak on these babies. Do your home work first and go shopping

Thanks for all the fantastic replies. What is the most reliable and powerful flash for the 996 Turbo? Although exhaust sound is personal, what is the "best" sounding yielding power and shedding weight at the same time?

A good remap and exhaust should bring 510/520 bhp and a big bag of torque !! Speedtech 3" with100 cells seems to be a good one. Will tell you soon as I am going to fit one next week or so. Concerning the weight ...well they are a bit fat I am afraid. New exhaust will same a bit but it isn't a lot. Leave it as it is or buy something else . It is a Supercar not a racecar.
