I've recently been driving sedans in an effort to find a 4-door replacement for my Audi S5 and am finding that nothing is nearly as fun to drive as my UMW 996TT. Unlike Dell, my kids are totally unhappy being in the back of a Porsche (or Audi for that matter), so one or the other must go.
Seeing as it took me so long to find a White/Black 996TT, I guess the Audi gets kicked to the curb. I wish I had an idea what I wanted to go with it though! I test drove an e60 M5 today, and it just left me a little underwhelmed. I can't afford a Panamera Turbo or a Cayenne Turbo, so that's out.
I'm thinking of going old skool and doing some modding. Maybe an e39 M5 or an Audi RS6...choices, choices. Damn you Porsche (and Kevin) for making a car standard that's hard to live up to
CLS55? E55? S6? S8? Corolla?? I think I've gotten to the point where I don't think I'm going to be terribly happy with anything normally aspirated!
Actually, for a DD/grocery getter, a 335is sedan is hard to beat for the money. Not beastly like a 996TT, but plenty quick with lot's of low-end torque. It's also very tossable and sure footed for spirited street driving.
I know it isn't a big status symbol, but the 3 series are the most fun bimmers to drive.
There are days I'm sorry I didn't keep mine. Not in lieu of the TT, but in addition to it.
sounds like we are in a similar boat. I got a ctsv wagon (manual) to tote the kid around but even with 556hp, it's no kick in the pants like the 996tt!
^^^^ then u need to take the cts-v to next level, mine makes 550/580 at rear wheels....my family hauler...I love my Vagon!.... as for the PO, I sold my heavily modded RS6 for 996tt(modded). I miss the RS6 for its room(i am 6-4"), but the car really is a stealth missile, off line, slush box and nose heavy...but open road, a bullet with a stage 2 tune(gutted DP's, exhaust, bigger IC's, tune) I dont miss the maintenance costs....however the tt took its place, everything marked up on the RS6.
depends on what your budget is, but my bro has an e55 AMG wagon. What a beast! E63 may be better. Not as fast as the turbo, but close enough for a big grocery getter.
An 05-06 E55 is the best you can get and as has been said, it is very tunable. Lots of torque right off the showroom floor, but if you want better steering response, an E63 is better. Be wary of fuel pump leaks. Ask the owner if they fill up or do a partial fill. If you fill up, the pump may leak and the car smells like fuel.
this is a little off the usual list, but I have a 335D w/ the M package. I really don't need two cars, but having a hard time parting with it. Low end torque is awesome, avg 30mpg all around, and on the freeway 39mpg while averaging 85mph. Have had it two years, 35k miles, and other than oil changes, has not been in the shop. I guess there is a reason >40% of cars in Europe are diesels.
How do you cts-v wagon drivers like it? I had a first gen cts-v that I got rid of last spring. I got very excited at the car shows when they had a v wagon, but then I got inside of it. It is a lot smaller than I expected. And frankly, I was disappointed (but I think that's because I was so excited for it).
And as far as the OP,
Why do you want AWD? I live in Cincinnati as well, and I had no problems in the winter with the v.
I have always wanted an avant, RS6.... not a fan of MB. I bought CTS-v, cause it was practical and over the top for a wagon. I have driven my family of 5 in it a # of times. No issues, BUT I will agree, for 6-4" there is more room in porsche with respect to driver comfort, and visibility. If i push seat all the way back, i have a huge blind spot to my left with pillar. It drives on rails, yes rails. Its magnetic suspension is awesome. all in all I am very happy with it, and i can push rear seats down and load it up with stuff
