MK19, just checked the area you mentioned. Snap, bending the harness at the point between the connector and closest grommet gave an open circuit on one of the wires.
To go back to the original issue it appears that fatigue in this area means braking or sharp turning makes it go open circuit leading to the computer not getting a logical input. It then alarms and turns off PASM/ABS because it can't trust inputs.
Full marks for splicing at that area as the casing is very tough. I think this is basically a small design flaw that will impact at higher mileages.
If the other side does this I will simply fit the harness repair kit.

Great john...thanks for confirming that location. Yes, you need a good utility knife to cut the molded grommet open because the failure is inside there.......but it can be done, on the car, and I did it to confirm the fault before doingb the full replacement repair.
