Read up on IMS bearing issues with the N/A 996 and 997 cars. That's reason enough for me to stick to the turbo/GT3 IMO.
Unless you go with a 09+, but then you have potential buildup on the intake valves due to DFI.

The 996 NA engines have some problems that don't exist in the turbo's engine. The TT's "reputation" often gets lumped in with the NA cars. The 996TT is still a turbocharged Porsche, top of the line in its day, and more car than anyone needs.
So it's an incredible value and nothing responds to a little tuning like a turbo.

As hard as I've tried I just can't see the front end of my 996TT when I'm soaking up teh monster thrust. Thats the only word I can find for my tuned 996TTX50 - thrust. It's really addictive.

I actually think the 996 wide bodies are better looking than both the 997 and 991 in any variant.
I do the the 997 has the best looking interior of any 911.
As others have said, you can't compare a 996 TT to any NA motor. Apples and oranges.

I'm sort of glad the NA crowd lumps the TT into the same boat. I would not have been able to afford the Turbo if it had not been so "devalued". Before I really started looking at 911's I could not tell the difference between the 996 and 997. There are so many more similarities then differences. Both are beautiful cars. I passed a 991 today and even that is very similar. Had to get really close to spot the difference, as I approached from the back. Not sure if it's better looking then the 996 or 997 though. It was a NA model. I think I could have taken him on a roll on if push came to shove! So hows that for a 9 year old car?

My first p car was a 05 C2S and it was great for all 400 miles I drove it. Nimble and responsive but then I drove my friends new at the time 997tt, it was an 07 and I felt boost and was hooked. I could not hunker down to buy a new turbo at that time so I went with a 05 Turbo S vert which gave me the boost and then bought a 03 tt coupe for modding which I have now for 5 years and love. Sold the ttS a year later after having both for a time, just preferred the coupe over the vert for track use.
Since trading the C2S for the ttS the only NA car I have thought to buy has been the 6GT3, but that is a whole different car from even a 7 C2S that I had from what I hear. A stock 996tt is one thing but with some bolt ons and tune the car can become a beast which is why I have kept mine as long as I have.

I got out of the M96 engine when I sold my Boxster S and I wanted the GT1 engine not another M96 engine engine in a 997.1

What the 997 "got right" was the reduction in turbo lag. The feel of power delivery in a turbo is much different than a normally aspirated (NA) car. Thus, comparing an NA to a turbo is difficult, unless it is on paper. As far as I am concerned any car scratching or sub 4 seconds 0-60 is awfully fast. what really get's my blood pumping is on/off ramps and interchanges at speed
.
Determine your budget, head to a dealer and drive what fits. You will have all of your questions answered regarding the driving feel of a 996/997/C2S/TT, etc.

Thanks for the responses guys, keep them coming. As far as comparing a 996tt to a 997 c2s, the 0-60 and 1/4 mile times are very close, so when you say the tt is way more car or it's not fair to compare a turbo to an n/a, what are you referring to? I think the cs2 is only off by about 2-3 tenths of a second, no?
Yes, according to zerotosixty.com:
2006 C4S is 4.3 0-60 and 12.6 1/4 mile
2001 Turbo is 3.8 0-60 and 12.1 1/4 mile
The 2001 c2 is also 4.5 and 12.9 and there is no one out there saying that thier stock na car is just about as fast as a turbo. Tenths of a second are FOREVER when you are actually running a car. A half a second in o-60 is a very long time.
It has already been said here. The engine in the turbo is completely different than the engine in the NA cars. They are stronger, will hold up better, do not have the longevity problems that the NA motors have.
And, if you want an extra 75 hp or so, just chip it. Then you are pushing 500 flywheel hp. Up to you.
Also, resale value. The c4s will keep dropping as the 997s get older while the turbos are really holding thier value and will probably start going up (just like what happened with my 79 turbo that I bought 10 years ago for $17k)
Thanks

My choice was an '04 996TT Cab or a new '07 C2S Cab 4 years ago. I prefer the whole look of the 996 TT over the 997 and love the headlights. I am sure glad my wife made the decision - the Turbo. After looking at both we went home to discuss and she ended the discussion really quickly. She wrote me a cheque for half the price of the 996TT and said forget the 997. 4 years and many mods later I'm sure glad she was so insistent. The extra performance even stock is amazing.
