I think those speakers are 2 ohm speakers due to the Bose amp and not the usual 4 ohm speakers. If you use 4 ohm speaker, they will play at a lower volume then the rest of the ones in the car.
I've come to the opinion after reading a number of posts on this topic over the last year, that it is very difficult to properly match non-Bose speakers to to factory Bose amp.
There are some good upgrades using separates, but you will need to replace the head unit, amp, and sub to really improve the sound.
I could be wrong, but that seems to be the consensus backed up by some good sound shops I have talked with.
I've actually managed to get surprisingly good fidelity out of the Bose system when playing a digital source. The low end is a little weak, but I'm not trying to annoy the people in the car next to me so it is okay.
I'm also interested in replacing the front speakers, I've read that the maximum mounting depth is 2". Don't believe you can stuff a crossover box up there, however I know there's quite a bit of space available behind the lower console (however, mine is filled with the components from Escort 9500ci).
Regarding the amp, I figure you could either replace all speakers in the car and add an aftermarket amp, or you could replace the headunit to power just the front speakers. In my case, I've replaced my head unit with a Pioneer X930BT Nav. My future plans are to replace the door speakers, and rear speakers and the Bose Amp, thus making all speakers and amp match at 4Ohm.
my experience was about the same..upgraded the speakers in the car to Focals...then tore out all the bose stuff, the amps, and the head unit. replaced the amp with three digital Pioneers, the head unit is a Pioneer, and a sirrius module. You can't get around having a crappy source, amp, and speakers...It is like the water tight compartments on the Titanic...you might be able to survive if only one part was crap...but all three is too much. I will post some pictures if you want to show how I did it.
