They don't get very good fuel economy, 17-20 mpg mixed.

Expensive to insure.

People always want to car talk and chat.

Women and girls want rides.

People think you're rich or a CEO.

Tires wear quickly and are not cheap. Well into 3rd set with 21K on car.

You find yourself making excuses just to run errands.

The Canyon Sheriffs Patrol knows you by your first name.

People think you bought the car to pose or show off.

Can't drive the car to work being self employed.

You always have to park way far away form store entrances.

No valet parking.

Need more reasons not to buy one?

It's Arctic silver with slate interior, has a fender bender on the carfax, but the owner has pics to show damage. I saw the pics, it looks pretty nice. I'm not sure why everyone doesn't believe the guy. He posted his phone number, VIN etc.

I suggest you have your car checked; 1st gear should pull like a freight train.

Wink

One of the biggest drawbacks is going through the canyons on a drive, I find that my neck muscles get sore from all the awesome acceleration, cornering, and stopping forces. I also find that I get lightheaded when stomping on the brakes coming to a corner.

I have driven a few corvettes, mustangs, rice rockets, and german supersedans. This car is so capable and easy to use every day. We have great canyons here in CO that I find myself making excuses to go somewhere. I cant see how anyone can even come close to the limits driving on the streets. I dont drive my car to work, but I find myself hurrying home to get in it and feel the boost. At least for me, this car makes me giggle and smile every time i drive it. But aside from all of that, I dont see why you would want to own one.

I get 24-26 regularly. Downside is premium fuel required.

Expensive to insure.

Not that much more than my VW in my experience, and I live in NJ.

People always want to car talk and chat.

I dont see this as a negative

Women and girls want rides.

Ibid

People think you're rich or a CEO.

You're driving a Porsche. You may not be rich, but you aint poor.

Tires wear quickly and are not cheap. Well into 3rd set with 21K on car.

How do you drive? I get 20k on the backs - the fronts look to be good to 40k.

You find yourself making excuses just to run errands.

Again, not a bad thing.

The Canyon Sheriffs Patrol knows you by your first name.

Buy a Valentine 1. Will pay for itself in a week.

People think you bought the car to pose or show off.

Absolutely true, esp from peope who wish they had one and cant afford one.

Can't drive the car to work being self employed.

Being self-employed, you have the option to work from home...

You always have to park way far away form store entrances.

SO true. But is good exercise.

No valet parking.

I wont let a valet park my VW, never mind my 911TT

Need more reasons not to buy one?

Have a Porsche mechanic or experienced 996 Turbo owner drive it and let them decide if it is pulling properly. The Turbo's 1st gear has an overall ratio of 13.14, and even without being able to build full boost (because of how fast the engine winds up) the pull at WOT should be very dramatic.

maybe my problem, is I have never floored the pedal in first gear. I usually switch to second at 3k

Then your lethargic feel is operator error... I have to start shifting well before redline just to get the shift in without tapping the limiter, and I know from previous posts Doc does the same. The fun in my car really begins at 3k. The X50 cars are a little laggy.

Back on topic. I can't think of a reason not to buy one of these things. Sorry, no help there.

Well there you have it. You've been missing one of the biggest thrills the Turbo offers.

Ohio I believe the guy is selling it at that price but I am saying its so far under market price that I would be skeptical that there is not some hidden issue bringing the asking price down to that level. Has the damage been fixed? Who knows could be a good deal but just saying be very careful and do your due diligence in maintenance/history/ownership research and PPI. Do you have the link to the ad?

The first time you do it just make sure there is nothing in front of you.

Yep.

It was arctic silver with grey interior, '04 X50 with 49k miles.

I think the story seemed believable. IMHO, the below-market price was due to two factors:

1. Car had been in two accidents, requiring repair/paintwork on several exterior panels (can't find the ad anymore, but if memory serves, driver's door, front bumper, and rear bumper... something like that?). Owner claimed to have pics of the accident damage, but would only email them to interested parties - would not post them online.

2. Owner apparently is relocating in the immediate future due to a job change, and needed to move the car in basically 2-3 days tops, since it was impossible (or at least cost-prohibitive) for him to take it with him. Sounded like he already had a low-ball offer from a dealership local to him, so he was just looking to improve upon that offer within his extremely tight selling timeframe.

I just did a nationwide Autotrader search for Turbo X50's, and 14 examples were found. Some dealers, some private party sales. These are asking-prices of course, but so is the one advertised on 6SO - so we're apples-to-apples.

Range of prices within this search:
Highest Price:$68,700
Lowest Price:$45,500
Average Price:$56,888

So, it seems the $35k asking price for an '04 Turbo X50 is definitely below-market... roughly a $10k haircut, due to the accidents, and desperation by the seller (no time).
