Default Battery venting

I need to vent....

I was looking around my frunk today (unrelated issue) and noticed a buildup of corrosion/acid around the battery and tray. On closer inspection the vent had no fitting inserted and was dribbling acid! When I pulled the battery out there was a bag attached with an elbow and a plug - it has been like this since I bought it about 5 months ago (battery looks quite new). Tray is rusted, bolts rusted. Totally preventable damage annoys me a lot - FFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUU!

Anyway tray is out, washed with baking soda and lots of water, flushed the surrounding area and unblocked the drain holes. I'll have to put it back together then redo when i have the right supplies as it's my daily driver.

Cheers Ben...not a happy camper.

I also had some white battery acid residue on the battery tray, but everything was properly vented (I do the battery installations myself). I ordered a new tray and new bolts rather than trying to clean, prime and repaint.

I never had any problems until I started using my Porsche battery maintainer.

Not good, but it can be fixed. One of the first items I checked after I purchased my '01 996TT and replaced the battery.

Better check your battery maintainer, it might be cooking the battery causing acid to leak out.

Optima bracket, 50 bucks...from a company called yellow dog motorsports. 10 more to ship it.

Optima model 34R

I have a 3rd party maintainer...a "smart" unit.

No issues since. No leaking. Less weight. Yada yada.

I'll have to look closer at the maintainer. I don't think there is anything I can adjust on it. In the meantime, I have simply stopped using the maintainer. I'm not away from home for as long as I used to be (work), so I'm able to drive the car way more often.

a good maintainer will not over charge the battery. Can't speak for the Porsche (made by who knows?) My interstate maintainer works perfectly.

Why would Porsche sell a battery maintainer that wouldn't work properly on one of their cars?

They most likely work properly unless you happen to have one that is defective.

I have the Ctek 4.3 and finds it works great. The car sits all week; sometimes two weeks, but the battery is always ready to go. Never a sign of over charging.

Battery need to be connected with the vent pipe, always !! It's not only when it leaks but also there is some fumes coming out of it all the time . this will corrode everything around , clips , bolts etc....Checked mine when I bought my car and it wasn't vented.....corroded tray, bolts. Did clean everything, repainted the tray and bolts. As my battery has 2 vents holes I bought a Y connection, rubber pipe, clips, new elbows and reconnected everything to pipe fitted on the car. While you check , clean the drain rubber cones ....they are very often filled with crap and you don't want water to stay there !!
