Default GoPro Hero 2 Camera installation...

Had to get a new Tow hook after the oem one did not work during a small accident with my car. So, I ordered two hooks from Rennline, as well as the custom mount for the Hero 2 camera.

The car is ready for the track and decided to install the camera for evaluation purposes. In order to get good sound from the 996 TT, it made sesne to install a remote microphone to the rear since it is so quiet up front. Also, you have a better idea what is going on with the car mechanically while watching the video. The microphone exits from the tow hook hole in the front, and exits from the bumperette opening in the rear and can easily be accessed when needed and hidden when not.

I will probably mount other locations on the car, but the tow hook location seems pretty good so far.

Here is a crude video I took the other day testing out the sound and video quality down a local road. Lot of Police in the area, so I had to keep it civil.

How are you finding the GoPro? Worth the purchase?

if you're asking me, then so far yes, its wide angle and better sound quality are light years ahead of my old SonyCam that I have been using......and that's just incar....I've got the same Rennline mount on my 964 and will be trying the camera out on that soon....will post video when I have......

I really like it so far. However, I might be purchasing a Racelogic data logger with the two camera system. Then I will be able to compare the two.

Love the idea of the sound what microphone did you use? Sounds great listening to the engine instead of wind noise!

Here is a little drive I took yesterday. It was more about determining whether or not I like the camera placement and recording the sound.:

The GoPro is a fantastic little camera. I have the new Hero2 version. I can't wait to get it set up on the car. A few friends have them and it is what convinced me to get one, as I use it more for outdoor sports so far, particularly mountain biking. If anyone is contemplating one, it's well worth the $300 price tag.

Sorry to bump a slightly old thread but this turned up the exact answer I was looking for.

How long of an extension cable are you running there (to connect the mic to the GoPro)?

Bump for the length and where you ran the cable for the microphone. My GoPro works great, but that loud sound of air rushing in the camera means I cannot hear the engine.

the Olympus ME-51S Stereo Microphone, along with Cables To Go CTG 12ft 3.5MM STEREO AUDIO EXTENSION CABLE M/F off Amazon, I ran mine from the inside roll bar mount through the rear wall/seat, through engine bay then dropped right rear license plate light fished wire through and resecured light up then clipped to license plate, will try engine bay this weekend since the turbo exhaust is not the best sounding out there

I have a 944 so my routing is probably different (I assume, from your avatar, you're mounting this on a 911).

But in my car, in the rear hatch, there are two compartments behind the rear wheels. I ran the cord down into the cubby behind the driver's rear wheel, and at the bottom of it is a small hole (presumably a water drain). I ran the wire through that, tucked it up above the rear valence and duct taped it up behind the rear bumper, just above the muffler. It picks up plenty of exhaust noise and the bumper seems to cut off most of the wind.

You can also now partner the GoPro wifi version with Harrys LapTimer for a excellent track combo.
