Default Whining sound when parking

I just had my clutch and accumulator changed. Noticed the other day a whining sound when driving my car into carage. I have to turn the wheels all the way and also slide the clutch to make my car crawl uphill to my carage. When turning wheels and crawling up there is a whining sound that continues for a while (5 to 10 seconds) when the car is parked in carage and idling.

Any thoughts? Power steering pump making noise? Normal? Low fluid?

2001 TT, 100% stock.

Just check there is no fluid leaking - and check fluid level. Some whine from power steering is normal particularly on close to full lock. The hydrolic circuit for clutch assist (on 997 tt - and hence i think on 996 tt as well) is shared with power steering. There are clamps that could fail if they re-used them (had it happen to me when they replaced the slave) and lead to leak. In any case worst case scenario you will notice power steering fail and pump noise will be on 100% of the time (then you will have clutch assist fail). Stop and toe it (you will also have fluid dump at that point) - if you continue driving beyond this point you will risk destroying the pump.

Where does the sound come from? Interestingly enough, I had a strange whining/whirring noise from the front the day my accumulator went bad, but never before or after I stopped to fill up for fuel that day.

I used to hear a really horrible whining noise when I was parking, and occassionally when I was driving as well. Then I asked my wife to get out of the car. Done and done.

Could be the Pump Drive Belt too.

I thought about that but this clearly comes from the engine compartment of the car.

Checked the pentosine level engine cold. 0,5 centimeters below HOT -level. Will there be pressure when engine is hot? The cap was not turned in completely. The tech at dealer must have left it a bit loose a couple of weeks ago because I have never touched the cap. (My clutch + accumulator replacement was an engine out job. The tech broke the tool that is needed to extract an axel to make room for the clutch to come out.)

To me the sound seems to be coming from a pump. I am not worried about it - just curious to know whats going on.

I guess best thing is to visit the dealer and show him the problem - just speak to the tech who done the job - explain that you hear this new noise, describe when it occures. Even if it happens to be power steering and not one of belts/pulleys - all of this is linked to the recent job done by the tech.

avader, I would do that if the dealer wasnt 170 miles from here. I will follow how the sound develops over time and if it does not get louder or more frequent I will mention about it when I take my car to the next service, which is next year.

Could be the old pressure control valve, which requires the reservoir to be replaced.. Think it's documented in a TSB.

What happens when you depress the clutch pedal?

It has no immediate effect on sound. When the clutch is released on neutral gear the sound goes away within few seconds.

I think it is a pump that has to work hard when wheels are completely turned and clutch used to make the car crawl.
