as an fyi, I just changed the oil in my 993TT and wouldn't you know it, the engine has a magnetic drain plug.

There was nothing on it though.

Oliver has a metal plate in his head.....so, I'm guessing it stuck to it.

Maybe the socket is magnetic.

Default After 5,000 miles, an oil change

Hi Guys;

I said that I would post pictures of the Dimple Drain Plugs after I changed my oil next time. Well, that time has come. I have 4,600 miles on the oil, and did the oil change this afternoon. Here are the pictures.

Here are pix of my set-up. The one thing about using these drain plugs is that they are all 17mm in size. That simplifies things in that you only need one socket. These first pix are of my draining the crankcase drain. Two pix of the drain plugs. Nothing on the plugs.

Default Pictures of the Oil Tank being drained

Here are a few pictures of the oil tank being drained. I'm getting a bit better about being able to keep the oil inside the catch bucket. It ain't easy, as you guys know. Once again, there is not a lot of debris on the drain plug. There are a few small pieces of "stuff", but nothing to write home about.

Default Draining the Turbo

I only took pictures of draining the oil out of one of the turbos. The other one was identical. Again, there were just a few small specks of debris. Nothing to write home about.

So, here's the grand conclusion. There doesn't seem to be any advantage to using these, or maybe any, drain plug magnets on the Turbo 3.6L engine. In my mind, there aren't sufficient iron filings being generated by the wear on the engine to justify spending $120 on magnetic drain plugs. Now, the reality is that my engine only has 35,000 miles on it. Will there be more debris caught when the engine has more miles on it? Only time will tell.

But, to be practical, I can't really recommend that you spend $120 to buy these or any other magnetic drain plugs. Not for these engines.

Larry I have to agree! One thing on catching the oil form the tank without making a mess. I use the oil case box and rest the catch bucket on it, directly under the drain. It seems to give me enough room to pull the plug and not have any spill. Of course it depends on your ramp height and height of the catch basin. This is the best thing I could come up with. I f you can do it this way, just be carefull pulling out the catch basine to avoid spills.

Thanks for the followup!

Do those plugs still have the same magnetized pulling power as they did when you 1st got'em?

You know, I didn't think to do the pipe wrench test on them while I had them out. Of course, there is no way of testing that now. I'll have to try to remember the next time I change the oil. But Dimple's website is very specific about their magnets holding their strength in spite of being located in a high temperature environment - an engine. I just can't independently confirm it.
