Well it was a Porsche dealership and that's probably all they were capable of doing...

How common is this problem? They sell a car based on how fast it is and they allow such potentially catastrophic failure?? If common, why would Porsche not fix this? This failure can kill people. There is huge monetary and reputational risk here. Toyota sales are still lagging their competitors. We are talking 10 years of production aging and becoming statisticly more likely to fail over time.

This may be a stupid question, but why can't you use an AN Tap on these cast pieces, and then thread in an an-male to nipple adapter with some sealant/loctite.

I must admit it's a pretty crappy design, but I bought mine in 2007 from the dealership that did the work. I've tracked the car at minimum 3-4 weekends per year over the last 4 years of ownership, much of it in the mid-atlantic during hot summers and humid conditions. One year I did as many as 32 days... No issues, so far. So exactly how poor a design is it? Don't know, but mine will be addressed this season while I track the other two cars we're focused on.

Dan, thanks for bringing this issue up!

Yeah, the problem is that it only works fine until it doesn't, and then you could end up in the wall, or the innocent person behind you ends up in the wall.

Thats why its a crappy design. This is a simple thing that one of the most renowned engineering firms in the world should not overlook.

If you own a car with the GT1 engine and it has failed this way, give them your VIN. If you won't do it for your own sake, please do it for the rest of us. Otherwise, it looks like we're just mice.

Hey guys, figured I would post here as well, I had this happened recently and will be taking it in to the guys at Sharkwerks to get it fixed right.

If you've had this issue please take the time to fill out a complaint at the NHTSA complaint website, it doesn't take long.

My cars is a 2001 and has never had the problem. Wasn't there some issue with version on the coolant release valve/cap that was set at a much higher pressure then was it was suppose to be. Which causes the problem?

I have a 2001 and it happened to me a few years ago and had the effected pipes welded but need the rest done as well (welded or pinned). Sharkwerks has a great solution but I'm tying this to a clutch and turbo upgrade. I understand that ALL of these GT1 Metzger engines are at risk (6T, 7T, GT3, GT2).

I recently received a letter from Porsche stating that due to a class action lawsuit settlement they are now paying for anyone that has had their coolant pipes fail and then repaired. There is a reimbursement paperwork included that one fills out and sends to Porsche including the bill for the repair. My coolant pipes failed two years ago and they were repaired by Porsche as my car was still under CPO. This deals with the Cayenne. Perhaps something similar may materialize for the GT1 engines if and only when someone finally sues Porsche.

Would it be possible to get a ballpark cost for this fix? My 996TT is leaking now.

Does this have to do with engine being same as previous air-cooled design?

I've been told $3-4k to have all of the fittings welded.
