Also, in my personal experience, castrol syntec 5w40 smells burned and was black after only 2,500 miles in my GTI.
I am not a fan.

I have been on a 2.5-3k interval on changes. 83k on the clock. I switched to Castrol Edge Syntec 5w50 last change from M1 5w40 tdt.
No noticeable diff in IMS noise from M1, but after 2k no oil burn and no smoke at start. I was topping off after 800-1000 mi on M1 for the last 20k. Oil looks to be less dark than M1--more honey than black and no smell after 2k. With it getting colder will be switching in 5w40 soon.

But I believe this 5w-50 oil is a bit cheaper (at least from the distrubutor) than Mobil 1 0w-40 oil. I know it is cheaper than the nearly $10/quart the dealer charges if I opt to have the dealer supply the oil for an oil/filter service.
Anyhow, buying the oil in increments of 6 quarts is not a hardship since both of my cars are now this stuff.
(As an experiement I ran Mobil 1 0w-40 oil in my Boxster for a bit over 5K miles. I can't say the engine was any noiser or quieter at startup or at any other time with any other oil I've run in the engine except (years ago) Mobil 15w-50. The engine didn't use any more (or less) oil and fuel consumption was unchanged and so on... Last but not least the engine didn't blow up either.)
Since you asked, I would never run a turbo diesel oil in either of of my Porsches.
Sincerely,
Macster.

from macster #14 (Note: For our friends in the EU and other regions there are other oils that are good until sometime in 2011 but to keep this posting to a reasonable size I elected to not include EU or other regions and the oils available in the EU and other regions.)
i am in germany and am having a hell of a time trying to find lists that go beyond what i see here which is all the US stuff, has anyone heard of liqui/moly top tech 4100 its a 5/40 supposedly for gas and diesel engines...i'm looking for a noise damper for the IMS(?) racket it is almost embarassing as well as nerve wracking since i can't imagine an engine making this kind of noise and being called 'normal'...repeatedly by the porsche techs at now,so far, 3 porsche zentrums(the dealers) and a couple of indys, i almost want someone to tell me that this noise must be fixed before the thing seizes up on the autobahn at 3 in the a.m. a couple hunnerd miles form nowhere, but there IS nowhere like that in all of europe, anyway, whaddya think? about the liqui/moly, thanks, kk

Guys,
My car is at 37k miles and I usually change the oil around 3k, I was running M1 5w50. Reading Kevin's thoughts on the subject I changed out a little early at 2500 miles, it came out black (not sure if that means anything). I went to M1 5w40 TDT. It is quieter at start-up can't say how this compares to the 5w50 when it was fresh. He also suggested on another post to cut open the filter; happy to report mine contained only oil and no metal filings!
O'Reilly's in Phoenix carries the M1 Turbo Diesel in gallon containers around $30. Cheap insurance; total oil change including filters and washers about $80. I don't care what the manual says I'll continue with the 3k intervals, it's my engine (and wallet if it goes south!).

Castrol Edge FST 10W-60 for me. I had my car serviced at TTP (tuner who also builds turbos for RUF) http://www.t-t-p.de/english/index.php and he said that Mobile 1 is ok for stock cars. Once flashed Mobile caused them problems whilst Castrol did not. He said our engines run very hot (race high tolerances turbo engines) so the higher the top end weight (60) the better. Unless you run in -25C weather the engine will thank you for it. http://www.t-t-p.de/english/portrait.php
This is the ticket. It is brand new so it won't be on any approved list yet: http://castroledge.com/oil-range/ Click 10-60.
