Default Seller's Remorse?

How bad of a guy would I be if I backed out of a deal to sell my 996TT at the last minute? I haven't owned my car for very long and have been looking to move some assets around. However, I underestimated how much my wife and kids want me to keep the car (and it was a 40th bday gift from them, even though I paid for it).

I have a deal struck but no money has changed hands yet. I know the buyer has been getting his affairs in order re insurance and shipping, and he's trying to get a local guy to look it over for him this week to verify condition. So far there has been no hard cost to anyone.

I guess I know I should go through with it and end up getting another one down the road after I take care of some other business. But - I took my wife and kids out for ice cream in it tonight and I have to be honest - I almost called the buyer and said "deal's off" when we got back. How big of a pric* would that make me?

I'm the worst with seller's remorse - I really am. I'm lousy with it every time.

TIA ~

If no money has changed hands, and the prospective buyer hasn't gotten it inspected, I say contact him first thing and tell him you had a change of heart about selling, esp. if you are selling below market value or even at market.

If you're the original owner and have all maintenance history documented and papers, then there's alot of sentimental value attached. so that should increase the price of the sale. Is the car 100% stock? + $$ value.

Now if you're making a few thou over market, sell it, save the $$ and look into getting a later model TT down the road. you can even special order the next one for a more personal experience.

Good luck whatever the outcome.

How unhappy would you be in someone did that to you? I have had this happen to me more than once, life goes on.

No deal is done until the papers are signed and the money has exchanged hands.

If the "would-be" buyer is out any money to this point, offer to make him whole.

Anything could go wrong on the buyers side; insurance is too unavailable, shipping is cost prohibitive, financing falls through, cold feet ...

There are lots of cars out there, he'd find another.

Don't sweat it, just tell him the truth, he'll understand if he's a car guy.

be upfront and don't sweat it ...... keep the car. you'll miss it and if you keep and drive it for 6 more months you'll easily sell it for how much you're asking now.

Not cool to back out of the deal now! I know we all have had it happen to us on the buyers end, but I believe a deal is a deal from you as the sellers perspective.

Sounds like a deal subject to an inspection. If he doesn't like the inspection, he's off the hook.

When I was looking for my Turbo, I thought I had a deal on a car and was making travel plans. . . seller backed out. Glad he did because I got a much better car for a little bit more money.

As someone stated above, there are plenty of cars to buy, he'll find another.

I had a sellar back out on me when I was looking for my turbo. I lost sleep over that car, we were scheduled to do the ppi and he calls me with a change of heart. Be honest, don't burn the bridges, and enjoy your car. He will understand and there are plenty more out there for him to choose from. Good luck.

I had a buyer back out after giving me a deposit cheque. His wife wouldn't let him buy the car. I ripped up the cheque and sold it 2 days later for more money. These things happen. Keep the car. He'll understand and there's lots of cars out there.

I would be truthful with the potential buyer. If he is a real car guy, he likely will understand. Although, there is no legal obligation on your part, I think it is a matter of keeping your word.

Just the fact you're mulling it over here says a lot... says you really feel bad about shaking hands and then changing your mind - and this is good.

Seems to me you have to do what you feel is the right thing to do and either decision you make will be fine. People are usually pretty understanding.

There are lots of cars out there for either party!

Nothing to add. Agree 100% with everybody. As Hossier Daddy said, just that fact you are mulling it over says a lot. That sums it up and your decision seems to already be made

Ugh - thanks for all your insights. I'm torn - I did dream about this car for quite a while and found just what I wanted. However - I could use the money elsewhere and I really don't want to renege on my word. Even though I know the buyer could call today and walk away, I still feel obligated.

Is it okay if I just climb back in bed and hide under the covers for a while?
