I 'splained 'em already. The unsupported edge of the steel is finished with a plastic piece, which in the 997 has a mid-opening structural stiffening rib, to provide support against bumps. I don't think the air pressure build-up inside is going to blow he steel outward.

And, if you look at these openings from the front of the car, you'll realize how unlikely it is that they'll 'catch' birds. The overly-dramatic Ferrari intakes on the other hand ...

I've never looked at a 7Turbo and a 6Turbo side by side to compare the intakes. Time for a trip to my dealer to investigate
