Need Help, New to Porsche Considering 996 TT or 997 C2S
Hey guys, pretty much what the title says... I tried to read some of the past posts similar, but was looking for some fresh feedback.
I'm looking at getting an X-50 '03-'04 996 TT or an '06 - '07 997 C2S.
I'm thinking the HP difference will just be too much for me to give up... and am leaning heavily towards the 996 X50 cars... but is the 997 Chassis and Interior 'That' Much better?
Thanks for your objective feedback.
Dave

The Turbo cars are just addictive.
If you want power you're in the right place.
The 997s are really more developed in the interior, but they've both got steering wheels and clutch pedals, ha.

I was in the same dilema 1 year ago, I chose the TT because of the better engine/reliability. Also I felt the Turbo was something special, every men should own a 911 Turbo once in his lifetime. Also the ability to mod the Turbo makes it even more atractive.
Good Luck

Thanks MechanicalEng... that's exactly what I'm thinking too...
Now... I'm wondering... 2003 X50 Package... or push the budget into 2005 Turbo S territory?

S comes "standard" with PCCB brakes, too.
Neither any reason to reject an S, you just should be aware of the diffs. (Provided I haven't suffered a severe memory lapse.)
If the car has PCCBs you want to make *darn* sure the all braking hardware in tip top shape. Those things can be super expensive to replace. I've read costs of 5 figures mentioned.
I've never driven an X50 equipped car but in my researching the Turbo and the Turbo with the X50 option while the X50 provides more HP and torque at some RPM ranges, the standard Turbo engine in some acceleration contests the standard Turbo comes out ahead. Just a fraction of a second but ahead nonetheless.
The X50 package makes the engine more "peaky" I guess, narrows its torque band. We buy HP but drive torque so this is important to keep in mind.
My 03 Turbo is awesome enough as it is. But the X50 package may make the car even awesomer which ain't a bad thing.
Drive examples of both though and make your own decision based on how the cars feel to you.
Sincerely,
Macster.

I may be looking for a AWD P-car as well and the reason I am considering the 996 Turbo is because it has proven to be more reliable. I believe the 997 still has RMS issues and is not as reliable as the 996 Turbo. Good luck either way, now is a great time to buy. One good thing about the 997 is you could get CPO.

996tt Advantages: faster, better value at current prices, easily modifiable to even greater power, x50 pkg is great, AWD turns us all into better drivers, and finally, as Mechanical Eng said--every man should own one!!!
997 Advantages: sounds better (the 996 stock exhaust is tame), better interior.
I drove a 2009 C4S in the fall and was convinced I wanted one -but then drove the 2003 996ttx50 --I bought it. The C4S looked great with its flared wheel wells, it has a nicer interior- and it sounded great, but honestly it didnt pull the same way the turbo does. And the sound (which was my only complaint about the turbo--way too tame!) can be recified with an exhaust upgrade. Once you've tried boost, you'll never go back!

There are still 996 Turbos with CPO warranties. The best warranty is the more recent one -- which appeared sometime in 08 -- that is comparable to the new car warranty in what is covered.

If you spend the time to find the right 996 Turbo with lots of nice options you can have a substantially improved interior and all the performance of a Turbo.
Both are fine cars, but the Turbo(s) are in a league of their own versus the standard Carrera or S.
GLW your decision. Be sure to drive both and see what you like before you buy.

05 Turbo S coupes are hard to find..command top dollar. Not certain about the Turbo S being wider than the standard Turbo 996 though, never heard that before.

See my 2005 Turbo S? I LOVE this car. Absolutely bullet proof so far (knock on wood) and fast enough to scare passengers nearly to catatonics. The 997's dash is prettier, to be sure. On the other hand, I think the 997 door treatments look cheap, and that ugly round hub steering wheel is, well, ugly. I like my funny "fried egg" headlights.
I've had my S to 150 mph on the track (2/3 mile straight) and expect to do better as I find the edge of this all-wheel drive envelope. It's not just the power, guy, it's the all-wheel drive experience too. Did I mention 457 lb-ft of torque?
