Default CDR-220 upgrade

I am getting ready to ditch the CDR-220 in my 01 996t. Can I just pull it out and wire in any other unit and does anyone know where I can get necessary cable adapters etc to tap into the factory connector (power / speakers etc).

Also, I am unsure if the car has a separate amp. The replacement unit may have a built in amp so was wondering if anyone knows if the stock CDR-220 with in the 01's had internal amps with speaker wires coming to it or an external amp.

Thanks.

Yes, you can it is not fiber based. The amp was a an upgrade, so in your trunk you would see the amp, if it is not there, then the 220 is powering your system. Almost any radio will be better than the 220. I think there is a cheap able adapter available directly from Becker. Also, there is a Blaupunkt adapter that works too.

Thanks. I am planning on buying this kit and relocating the AC controls, and installing a 2DIN sized unit with nav.

Looking at the pictures of the kit, it appears it may have to adapters to tap into the factory plugs. I will have to email them and ask, but if anyone here knows that would be cool.

Yes, that's a good kit. You may still have to modify it a little. The folks that make the kit have some good instructions (although they are for a boxster). The harness may not match up 100% but it's close.

Do a search on the 996 board. Recent thread by RallyJon (I can't seem to link it).
