Default Mobil 1 5W-50

Mobil 1 5W-50 fully synthetic motor oil (specified as "GL" in the Porsche approved oil list) is approved for use in the 996 Turbo. Should the Mobil 1 5W-50 container specify somewhere that it is "GL", or is all Mobil 1 5W-50 fully synthetic motor oil "GL"?

Interesting.
I don't see a direct reference to "GL" on the website, but it does specifically list the oil as Porsche approved.
However, if you look at the URL, it does have GL embedded in it.

The site at the URL you provided specifies "Mobil 1 5W-50 Rally Formula". Probably not a big deal, but the Mobil 1 5W-50 I have does not say "Rally Formula". I found "Rally Formula" on a UK web site http://www.opieoils.co.uk/showproduc...etic-motor-oil and the container doesn't look like the container I have. Granted it's just probably the country/regional difference.

I called the Mobil 1 "help" line and the tech guy didn't have a clue what "GL" stood for. I asked if there were two different 5W-50 oils available, and he said there were different 5W-50s available based on different countries. I have seen GL referenced as "gear lube", but in the end, this term is not on the 5W-50 I have.

I think it means...."GREAT LUBE"....dunno....ask Kevin...he uses this viscosity all the time and highly recommends it. I recently switched and after about 1800 miles ....have about half of the oil consumption...better oil pressure....and it's quiet. Other than the fact it shows up on Porsche's list of approved oils, I don't know what else to tell you. I can't imagine that the presence or absence of GL would be anything significant or it would have been mentioned in the Porsche approved oil list.
