Default clutch replacement

Hi all I am just about to replace my clutch on my 996 TT 01 manual.

I have been informed that I sould remove the engine in order to replace the Kit but some others recommended that they can do it with just replacing the gearbox....

any thoughts...???

I've never done it myself, but my independant wrench swears that it is faster and easier to do by removing the transmission instead of the engine.

not me as well...
I am not a mechanic so that I could do it myself...

question is why OPC recommend to do it ( and of course charge ridiculous labour hours ) by removing the engine and not just the tranny???

Just a liitle FYI, the factory dealers do not just make up labour times, we use PPN (warranty time set by the factory) every job pays a set amount. For customer pay jobs, it is warranty x 1.5 most of the time. The job in question pays X amount of hours(regardless if you pull the engine and trans, or just the trans!!!), the factory WM says to remove the engine and trans unit!! I prefer to remove the engine and trans unit when R&R a clutch on 993, 996t, GT3, GT2. Yes, it can be done in car by just removing the transmission only. I like to do it out of car because the clutch fork, shaft, and T/O bearing can be a little tricky at times (needle bearings, alignment, etc..) Pick your poision. I like to see what I am doing and not do it by braille. Seen this kick some techs ***'s before. Not to mention the slave cylinder on the turbo can be a little tricky in car too!!

Do you have a Lift? Can you turn a wrench? Have you ever pulled the motor on a 996 turbo before? It is a big job either way, engine in or out. If this is your first time, I would strongly advise you to pull both engine and trans. so you can see how everything comes apart and goes back together. Bleeding the low pressure side of the clutch can be interesting. There is a bolt on the intake that as the engine is coming down and out if you forget to remove will crack the intake! Holds the aluminum plenum just past the MAF sensor to the bank 1 intake runner.

Good Luck
