Default Holding the flywheel to torque the bolts, how?

What tool do you guys use to torque the bolts so the engine doesn't turn? I know the manual says to use a VW tool but is there any other way?

thanks

Proper tool not expensive and recommend you get it. Takes the worry out of properly tightening flywheel bolts.

In some cases have used heavy duty clamp on flywheel -- use plain paper between flywheel and clamp to avoid marring flywheel finish and help clamp grip better on flywheel surfaces -- and gently rotate engine until clamp up against something solid. If possible use a piece of hardwood to keep clamp from marring whatever it comes up against, usually engine block.

Then tighten torque bolts in proper sequence and steps.

I can tell you chances are the proper clamp costs way more than the VW tool. I used heavy duty -- forged -- lifting clamps. Had them available to me at my place of work or had them in my tool box at my shop.

You want to make sure whatever clamping method you use doesn't damage the flywheel, doesn't damage the block or whatever engine casting it lodges against and the clamp doesn't come loose or slip and let you tumble head over heels as it does.

My advice is to beg, borrow or steal the proper VW tool.

Sincerely,

Macster.
