Or perhaps since my interior is Metro blue, I could do the gunmetal blue with a white shift pattern. I'll have to think about this one a bit

I've made up a few kit guns....a couple Hawkins and a Kentucky rifle....and have used the bluing and browning techniques on the barrels. I've noticed that even a good factory bluing job will wear and fade if it's handled enough. Wouldn't your attempts to color the shift ***** eventually result in the color wearing off simply due to palm friction>??? You'd have to somehow impregnate the color into the metal and the only way I know to do that is at the time of manufacture and casting.

Gunkote is pretty much impervious to anything short of a sandblaster. That's why it works so well on firearms where solvents are often used for cleaning.

I'm not convinced that I will do anything just yet. The shifter is supposed to be here tomorrow, so we'll see.

Dennis: You obviously have a lot more experience in using GunKote and other bluing products that I do, but my experience has been that ANY substance that's used as an external or add-on means of applying color to metal.....will eventually wear off by simply rubbing it. A shift **** is going to get thousands of rubs over the course of its life, and the fingers/palms have friction ridges.....I just don't think (personal opinion here) that a laid on layer of a stain is going to hold up. Of course you can always re-do it if it starts to wear.

I hear you Chuck, but did you notice that I said Gunkote is a ultra-thin thermoset resin coating? It's not a stain at it seems you are used to. I guess it could be more closely compared to powder coating only much more durable. It goes on so thin that etchings on the surface, like serial numbers or whatever appear to be unaffected.

Being unfamiliar with GunKote...I didn't notice the comment about ultra-thin thermostat.....hope this works for you. It may be a way for other guys to color code their shifters to the interiors.

Glad it worked out. Gert's the man on this euro stuff. Really nice job.

As a follow up, I have some observations about the shift **** I received from Carnewal.
  1. The product arrived in approximately 4-days after placing the order online.
  2. The Metro Blue leather is a perfect match for my OEM interior
  3. The aluminum **** looks so nice I doubt I will be applying an colors as discussed above
  4. Due to the way the ball mounts to the shift lever, I had to get creative with the set screws that hold things in place. No bigs since I have everything needed to make the adjustments.
Now here is the interesting thing (at least for me); As we know, the stock shifter is more of a pistol grip with an odd shape. What I have noticed in the past it the stock shifter rubs my palm the wrong way...like an annoying thing that is not easily identified, but makes the diving experience uncomfortable at times. The thing with the new ball shaped shift **** is that it fits most comfortably in the palm and provides a comfortable and smooth surface for the palm. I also adjusted the ball a bit higher than the stock lever which gives a bit more leverage and makes shifting smoother.

At any rate, I love my new shifter. Thanks for the nice product Gert...good job

i have a concealed carry with the Gunkote finish and it has held up pretty nicely. i had it coated approximately five years ago by a professional gunsmith. recommend it highly. i think it would look awesome with a black finish and the gear numbers in blue. it will be definitely be unique.
