235 - 40 - 18 Vs 225 - 40 - 18
Hi all,
A friend of mine has a 996 GT3 MKII and recently purchased a set of semo slick toyo tyres.
I bought from him his nearly new set of tyres Michelins 235-40-18 and 195-30-18...
I havent realised that fronts on a GT3 are 235!!!
questions:
1. why GT3 has a wider front tyre? (I would assume that a heavier car as our turbo would need wider fronts insted of lighter cars as GT3s)
2. Can I use them on my car? or would this cause a problem on my 4 wheel transmission? (235 tyres are a bit bigger in diameter than 225s)

Be careful about the diameters of the tires - they need to be pretty close to equal front to rear to avoid cooking your awd system. Tirerack has alot of specs for various tire / wheel combinations.

Many agree that the understeer present on many Porsche models is due in part to the major difference between front and rear tire contact patch (footprint or width). While many folks seem intent on increasing the size of the rear tire to 315 or some other width, a wider rear tire is not what the car needs to reduce understeer. For this reason, the GT3 has a wider front tire in an effort to increase front grip.
YMMV
