Question Michelin Tire Question

Time for my first rear tire change on my 04 TT cabrio, and I'm wondering if anyone has driven with both the stock Michelin Pilot Sports (295/30R18 98Y N1 XLB) versus the Michelin Pilot Sports PS2. I'm leaning towards just sticking with the stock Pilot Sports. Still have the stock front tires on the car.
Thanks

Jeez....first tire change...I'm on my fourth set. What is important to know is what you want in a tire, longevity, quiet, traction....If you were happy with what you had, why change? Doesn't sound like you drive very aggressively.

PS2 is a superior tire which was introduced after the PS. It was the spec tire for the GT3 (996). Most feel it is the finest street tire available.

Well a second opinion...if you track the MPSC is way better, for the road the Yokos are better. I have had the PS2s and although better than the Bridgestone S02s, not as good as the yokos...IMHO.

I would say i run the car moderately hard...I've only had it a few months and purchased it with 14K miles on it. Prior to my owning it, it was a "wife's" car. I want to stick with the Michelins since I am only replacing the rear tires and don't want to do the mixed brand thing. I don't think I would suffer at all if I ran the old Pilot Sports up front and PS2's in back.

I just installed the Michelin PS2's on my car before I did Mid Ohio DE 2 weeks ago. I would recommend the PS2 over the PS. I did drive a Carerra at Porsche Parade courtesy of Michelin with their PS tires. They are not as "agressive".

I replaced my P-Zeros with PS2's in GT2 sizes and couldn't be happier. It's a great tire on all accounts!

Same here....I find that I get about a two-to-one ratio on usage patterns of the rears over the fronts. I'm ready for another set of rears, but the fronts have a lot left in them. I was going to switch to another brand, but decided....mostly based upon all the positive feedback I hear..that I'm going to replace the rears with the 315 PS2's again....after all, that's all between the road and a $100K car.......well, sort of a $100K car...given the drastic price drops it would seem that lately they're not quite that...but they were at the time of the MSRP!!...and they look and act like it.

WROSS: You're saying that just for the road....not tracking....that the Yokos are "better"?? Can you explain what you mean by better... Since I don't track, but do like the mountain roads...how would you compare the Yokos to the PS2's? One of my major grouses is tire noise when they start to wear...how do the Yokos do in that department?

Chuck, I am talking Yokos for the street. The MPSCs are great (way better than the PS2s), but they need to be very warm to work, so they are tough for street riding. What I like about the Yokos is the ride and handling. I was not impressed with either of these qualities on the PS2s. About noise, to tell you the truth I am driving a frigin' cab sports car with LWFW & aftermarket exhaust...the noise thing just doesn't bother me. I want performance...that is it. I LOL at folks posting issues with squeaks and creeks. If I want quiet I drive the Lexus.

I was thinking of switching after I run thru this set of Michelins....but I was having trouble finding a manufacturer who made tires i the 315's for the rear and then trying to match the rolling distance to the fronts. Your comments on noise are well taken considering your setup...but I dont have a Lexus...I have a 1 ton Dodge Dually diesel!! and it's noisy.

Well then the Yokos will be quiet relatively speaking.

I did 13 track days on my PS2's and they not only hold up well but give great traction for street tires. I had a flat on one of my rears so had to replace it because the patch wouldn't hold, twice. 2 sets of rears last as long as 1 set of fronts. I had Pzeros before these and they suck. Wouldn't balance correctly and made a lot of road noise. Go with the PS2's and you won't regret it.

Another PS2 fan here! Don't want to rehash all that has been said...will simply say an EXCELLENT tire all-around.

Thanks for all the feedback. Just went ahead and ordered a pair of 295 PS2's (stock size replacement) from Discounttires.com for a total of $745 including shipping...about $100 less than tire rack and $300 less than what I could find locally.

While in my opinion I think the PS2 is a technically superior tire, if only replacing the rear you should buy another set of the stock rears and match all four next time. These cars DON'T like to have mismatched tires.

Please give me a call if I can assist!
