Problem with Door Lock/Alarm control - HELP

Asking for HELP once again;
This time it's the remote key control of the alarm/door locks; very intermittent at best, non-operative most of the time.
Yes - new batteries in the keys, have tried both keys, have moved around the car with keys, red LED's flash on keys.
This began some time ago and seems to have gotten progressively worse to the point that its inoperative ....... I have to use the key in the door lock, which seems to set the alarm and then when I open the door later,and unless I turn on the ignition, then the alarm goes off.
Any similar experience? Could I have a failing reciever (hard to think it's the key transmitter since the both keys act the same). Or a conrtol module?
Thanks in advance for any help or advice.

Thanks all and especially Wross.
Here are a couple of details in reply the the questions raised;
1) Yes....we are talking about the ineffectiveness of the Key Fob to operate the alarm and door locks.
2) The key fob pereformance didn't really change in one day.......it happened over the summer (heat can degrade the specs of electronic components), thus taking things "out of tune" so to speak. I suppose that the "length of the antenna" is a tuning adjustment that could compensate for other changes in the system.
Has anyone had similar experience as mine? and how did you fix it?
Thanks,
MK

Help wross.......sounds like you have this wired (no pun intended!)
Here's what I have done;
1) exposed the antena wire per steps 1 thru 4 (tested with both keys - flashing) no effect.
2) checked the exposed antenna lead length as found; it was the 130mm per the "CAUTION" note after step 5.
3) cut the exposed antena an inch (25mm) at a time, checking at each step with both flashing keys.....no effect. Continued down to 100mm until I'd shortened the exposed lead per step 5(Fig. 3)....no effect. But still getting the intermittant operation telling me the system can operate.
4) checked and reset all the connectors and the antena connection at the alarm/lock control box under the drivers seat.....no efect.
5) continued to step 6 and re-exposed the now shortened antena lead back to 130mm per step 6 by carefully removing the shield. No effect.
6) re-installed all back in the harness and into the car (but not the A pillar trim)......testing at every step.......no effect. But still get the ocassional operation .......
What do you think wross??
Thanks for your help and input.

Thanks Bob...........that may be the case with my car too. But I have 2 failed fob's (a bit of a stretch, but possible).
I had exactly the same experience on my wifes BMW X5 and the dealer fixed it with a new key fob (in that case we only had one). Cost about $135 if I recall.
Bob: what was the deal in replacing the fob? dealer item and re-programing I presume? cost? Or can I do-it-myself?
Thanks,
MK
