Default Oil consumption

I have a 2001 911 turbo with 26k miles on it. I drive 2 to 3 times a week and put about 75 miles a week on it.My driving habits are pretty normal, dont get down on it too hard, at least not in porsche terms. My qeustion is that the car uses almost 2 quarts of oil between 5k mile oil changes. Is this normal, or should I have something to be concerned about? Any help would be appreciated.

I use a quart every 1200 miles or so depending on city versus highway driving.

Default oil

I would say normal as some say they use none and others add about every 600 miles or so. I drive mine about like you and i would say i add some after about 1200 miles. Just guessing as i don't keep up with it as i know it is designed to use oil.

PCNA won't consider oil consumption 'high' until you demonstrate using more than 1 qt every 600 miles.....used to be 1qt every 1000 miles.

Mine gets driven hard, especially at the track and I've not used a drop in the 4K miles I've put on it since buying it... Car has 13K miles on it now...

I read in an Audi forum about a guy that "burned no oil" who later found out oil loss was compensated by other engine fluids....so he was being fooled. Anyone know if this happens in our 996TT's?

I was told by my dealer and to indy's that these cars all burn some oil.....but you never know.

Neither my 84 (130,000 miles) or 02 TT X-50 (10,000 miles) use an appreciable amount of oil. Except, that the 84 starts leaking like a siv when it sits through the winter months. I'm changing to Brad Penn in the 84 and away from the synthetics for this reason.

Steve

Yep I've heard also that if the car is used just for short trips and never really gets driven hard that the oil gets water condensation in there so you "think" you have plenty of oil but it's actually some water.

Without a dipstick to tell, and short of measuring the oil removed on oil change, we'll never know... All I can tell you is that my car gets driven atleast a couple times per week, gets oil changed every other track day (averaging an oil change every 2K miles) and it appears that I remove at least 7 quarts every time... This is with the car seeing redline for multiple 20-30 minute sessions over 2-3 days at the track... What I do is pour the old oil into those gallon containers that the 5w30 mobil1 (wifes 328is) and 15w40 rotella (For my Dodge Cummins diesel) come in. It generally fills one to the very top, and a second about 2/3rds of the way... That equates to "approximately" 7-7.5 quarts with the filter change. It's not exact, and I don't measure it purposely, just transfer from the oil catch pan to these containers for transport to the collection site at my local landfill.

My 02 sees limited track use, but reasonably aggresssive highway use. Very little stop-and-go, and all trips are about 30 miles. It now uses one quart per 8,000 miles. Rarely, I see the blue haze on start-up, and I can't connect it to usage, intervals, weather or ?? I wonder of the high-oil-users see it more, suggesting seepage past the rings when parked. AS
