996 TT and Corvette Z06 Comparison/Observations

Z-ot-6
I love my 01 Z-06.
Entry fee was low..... $28.5K with 23K Miles after almost 10K miles.
Interior quality is lacking.... but for $28.5 it's a bargin..... and you don't expect good interior build quality in a Chev (IMHO).
This car was built to track with the occasional trip to the office or store.
If anyone is considering a low cost easy to work on track car..... consider the C5 Z06.
You can change cam, heads, exhaust yourself. No big deal.. small block chevy.
----------
I'm on the hunt for an 01-03 TT. I'd love to keep the 01Z for track use and have the TT for daily driver/work.
My 30min test drive in a TT last winter made a lasting impression on me..... I will have one eventually

After many 911's and starting to think some of the P car people/groups, including myself, were getting a little inbred I decided to add something else to the garage.
I bought a C6Z about 6 months ago and have really tried to fall in love. There are some crazy good things about the car. The engine and transmission are brilliant. Great sound >3500RPM. No rattles and the dealer service has actually been pretty good. I also like a lot of the features. That said, it's been a bit like fast food for me. Cheap and high calorie content but doesn't really leave me wanting more. I just like the feel and touch of a Porsche.
The Z is up for sale in a couple of weeks and the I'm in the market for a deal on a modded 996tt or I might go to a 997tt.
Still wish I had that loving feeling for the Z, it just didn't work out.

Feeling
Boulder - Understand what you say about "feeling". I agree with what you say on my c5 Z.
I can't say I'm in love with this car, and a large part of my enjoyment from my "fun" cars is the intangible attraction that goes beyond the performance numbers......
I had that feeling with my 1969 firebird....... and I got a taste of it in the 996TT test drive.......
I'd give up some track-capability and 1/4 mile capability to have the fit-finish of the 996 TT

"So bottom line - which do I prefer? Tough choice - if they were the same price, it would be a tough contest. If one factors in the 2X price for the Porsche, then the Vette wins hands down."
Are you sure? You bought the Porsche in spite of the x2 price.
I know this is subjective but If they were priced both at $70k, I'd buy TWO Porsches. If I don't even want to buy a $70k Chevy Z06, and still choose the pricier Porsche.. why would I not buy the Porsche twice? One street cab, one coupe for track/whatever duty.

(and in five years it will still be awesome...not sure on the Chevy. Hope so for US auto market share.....afraid of where things are going for the us...if the Z06 were AWD and had a back seat...I might have gone for it...I like the feel and looks of the 911 though, and the engineering based on years and years of work....)

I will never buy an American automobile again, old classic collector maybe, but new model... not a chance. I currently own a Ford pickup, but when that drives into the ground, it will be replaced with a Toyota Tundra.
Given how many decades the big 3 mfrs. have been "trying to come into the modern age" across their lineups, it seems clear to me that within another 2-3 decades, American automobiles will be generally accepted as bottom barrel cars and that segment of US industry will be in the worst trouble ever.
There will certainly always be auto manufacturing plants in the US, but Toyota and MBZ will almost certainly be the only successful manufacturers present.
Wish the Ford, GM, and Cerberus execs would make the RADICAL change effective to carry this industry out of the dark ages.

My only regret is that I didn't do it sooner... I knew German Engineering was superior with the experiences I've had with BOTH my BMWs... But this P-car, it's in a league all its own... There simply is no substitute built in America.
And yea, I bought used, and took advantage of the depreciation others suffered, color me smart. I'll take a $70,000 2001 510WHEEL HP Porsche 911 TT over a NEW 2007 Chevy Z06 ANY DAY!!!
