Dilemma, Dilemma...
OK,
I know I'm going to get flamed for this, so I'm going to take it like a man...
I just bought a speed yellow 01 TT or $67K, as most of you might have noticed I'm located in the Bay Area California. Since I'm purchasing this thru a local car collector’s dealer, so there is no room around legal processes....
So I'm stuck with:
1. Register the vehicle in CA, and pay the 8.25% tax that comes down to about $5600. Where as State tax can't and won't help in anyways towards my income tax or AMT, or other taxes deductible perks that comes due April 15th of next year. Plus to top that, I think I have contributed (and will continue to contribute to the State Of CA, with my $$ buy paying the other sales taxes, plus speeding tickets (in which I been contributing "over 36 tickets in 12 years") Even with a couple speed contest ones and Excess 120MPH + where it's easily over $1000K in fine plus insurance company sticking up my *** a ruge increase. [Heck what can I say, 65 is just too danm slow !!! And I ride a bike]).
I'm not crying about the penalties and fines. I just don't think insurance increase is quiet fair since I haven't had any accidents nor any DIU, nor reckless driving, just plain speeding under good road and weather conditions). but the CA tax is the one that kills me.... it's a pretty big check that will go into the black whole and I'll never see a dime back !!!!!
2. A friend will let me ad his name to the title and let me register it in Oregon (where I have done this before with my bike when I purchased in a dealer over there). where as I'll drive around CA for a year with Oregon plates, and hopefully not get into too much trouble. Then re-register the vehicle in CA a year or two later and removing his name from the title. The draw back is:
a. Add his name to the title.
b. drive up, and follow the truck up there.
c. add 600 highway miles on it while driving down (ok so it's a nice road trip looking at the bright side)
d. arrange all this and pay the shipping fee. ball park $700
There is so much you can do with $5500 !!! other than write a check to uncle Sam !!!!! Like 19" wheels & tires, chip, exhaust, GT2 wing, GT2 Lip, suspension work.. and the list goes on and on.....
What do you think guys?
Flame On !!! I got my little fire extinguisher ready...

1. The tax does not go the the real "Uncle Sam" (the Federal government), it goes to the state of Taxafornia.
2. If you don't like paying high taxes, vote Republican.
3. Over 36 speeding tickets in 12 years? Do you have a radar detector?
4. When you get stopped for speeding again, what is the officer going to say when he sees your Taxafornia license and the Oregon plates?
4. Why would you be concerned about the 600 miles? Are you saving them for the next owner?

Let me get this right. You've paid "easily over $1000K in fine plus insurance company sticking up my *** a ruge increase" over the last 12 yrs. This is $1 million or $83k/yr in fines and insurance. $5k for sales tax seems like a drop in the bucket. And you've gotten 36 tickets in 12 yrs. More importantly, how do you get to keep your license?
Insurance companies calculate risk. When you keep driving 120+ on the road, the risk of injuring yourself and other motorists have increased dramatically.
On the other hand, no one wants to pay sales tax. I did the Oregon thing a few years back, when you only had to have it registered out of state for 90 days. Now I think it's one year or longer to avoid "use tax". I don't think you have to add his name to the title. Just title it in your name but in Oregon. Not sure you can "lay low" for a whole year without drawing attention from cops in Taxafornia. CHP derives its funding from vehicle license fees so they are very sensitive to cars that are not properly registered in Calif.
As for the added miles. Probably not a big deal. 996TTs are quite plentiful. Another 1k miles won't affect its value very much in either direction.
Maybe you should recalibrate your radar detector or limit your fast driving to the track.

My bad, Yes, I meant the Governator...
2. If you don't like paying high taxes, vote Republican.
It's Taxafornia, have you seen our population, my vote didn't make a difference...

Yup, and a traffic lawyer too charge $500 per case, we try to discredit radar, all the time, but some judges just won't listen.. (If he is a law enforcement officer he must be right).. yeah right...

Ahh I got that covered.
I'm sorry officer, I actaully work in Oregon, my company sent me there, I'm just down here for the weekend visiting the folks. I haven't changed my CA licence yet, because my company is in CA and my residence is OR is temporary... Worked B4!!! :-)

Good point !! scratch that !!!

- Actually I calculated, I paid close to $20K in fine and fee overall.. I bearly have my licence (thank god for the 3 year ageout period) Currently I have 2 points and holding on to the insurance company bearly.....

- Yeah, it has been changed from 90 days to a year now. And the DMV in OR requires you to show prove of residency, with a water, or electricity bill in OR address...

- Well, HWY 5 king city, I hate that place, also 101 stretch between Petaluma and SF is a drag... heck not like I do it in the midle of the city....
