Question Pros/Cons Turbo Convertible

Sorry, more questions from me about the coming (perhaps) turbo convertible.

What are people's feelings on the tradeoffs of convertible vs. coupe? I've heard purists say the convertible will never drive the same. Do you all agree? Will the convertible feel like a true 911 Turbo? How bad is the visibilty difference in the convertible vs. coupe for the Carrera?

Any (any!) thoughts on this issue would be appreciated.

I've decided to buy a TT, but am (obviously) hung up on the coupe vs. convertible decision.

Thanks in advance.

I have a 996 Cab and a 996TT. I'm going to get flamed for this but most of the most vocal people about coupe vs cab could not tell the difference. In a slalom I came in 2nd to a coupe that was preped for autocross, my cab was stock. 95% of the cars I involved were coupes; it's more about the driving than the car.

That being said, a pro or very experianced driver can tell the difference but most cannot. For 99% of what you will do with a street car you will not be able to feel the difference.

As for visibility, you can see out of both cars very well.

Buy which one you would enjoy more; if you like convertibles, get one. I love mine.

If you intend to seriously track the car you should get a coupe - stiffer chasis plus greater safety in case the car flips.

If you are not tracking the car then it's more a matter of preference - some people love cabs, others would not be caught dead driving one. Either way you'll have great car.

I agree with RWO. I actually have a turbo convertible, have 4 track days on it so far, and it has performance which is far beyond my driving ability (and I expect always will be). If you are good enough to be constrained by the difference in performance between a turbo coupe and a turbo cab, you should be looking at that full-race cup car. The biggest difference between my car and the coupes which I did notice at two of the track events was when I got to run with the top down-that's my reason to have one!

Frankly, I'm not good enough to drive either of them .

One follow-up though. You said you have a turbo cab? Is it an older one? Did they used to make one? I'm under the impression that them making a turbo cab for 2004 is a new thing.

I get out of one into another frequently and unlike RWO I will tell you there is a visability issue...especially trying to see right side (back) in the cab..........you can get used to it but either hard or rag it's there.
If you are OK w/ the way the Turbo body will look in a Cab then go for it. Some cab purists will tell you a cab s/be narrow body & light......turbo body (and all panals) definately has a dif look.

GreggT,

You are correct about looking over your shoulder. Good point. I didn't think of that; I just use the mirrors at the track...

Ditto that........very nice Jay !

Hey now, can anyone honestly say that cab would look better in a wide-body?
To each his own, but for my mind, pretty hard to improve .

Hmmmm, my firsst thought was "Photoshop" (and my second, and my third). But then there is always Tom Ridge, who has never liked me-does the government really consider me that big a threat? <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

So how'd you do this?
