X50 TT 996
#16
There's been alot of talk about whether the X50 option is worth the money. That the Unichip mod should get you the same HP increase for $3000. Has anyone considered whether you could do both (X50 and Unichip) for a true GT2 killer? Might there be drive train limitations that would make this impossible/dangerous?

I have a March production 996TT with the X50 engine option on order and was wondering what the X54 stainless steel exhaust option was. I thought the exhaust system was already all stainless steel. Is this just different tips or what.

Talked to a Porsche tech about the power upgrade last night. He told me that the power upgrade includes new turbo chargers, a different engine software, very minor exhaust system mods but muffler including catalysts is the same and the same gearbox as on the 996 Turbo but with shorter gear ratios to limit top speed and to enhance acceleration. He told me that the kit is worth the money because it is very well adapted to the shorter gear ratios. Retrofit is not possible because of the shorter gear ratios of the gearbox. However they could retrofit a car at the factory only if the customer is willing to install and pay a new gearbox which costs almost 11000 EUR. I asked if I can install the GT2 gearbox to my car and the tech denied. Then he told me that the GT2 gearbox costs only 7500 EUR and that the gearbox for the power upgrade does not have a oil cooler as the GT2 gearbox. We also discussed installing the GT2 front part and rear wing on the Turbo and he told me that installing both at the same time is no problem, only some minor mods of the cooling system in front is needed. Installing the front part only is no problem too but installing solely the GT2 rear wing is a deadly combination as he pointed out. Very dangerous. The guy works for Porsche France so I think he knows what he is talking.

Now I'm getting excited. My dealer called to tell me I have a February 4 build date fo my tt with X50. Does anyone know how long it takes the car to get to the US dealership (Chicago)after that point? I special ordered a color (1980 Casablanca Beige Metallic), so I'm not sure if that takes longer after the build date is set.
I wonder how much shorter the gearing is. Is it shorter in each gear or just in the upper ones? The owner's manual in other Porsches I've owned has listed performance numbers. Do we have any clues about measurable differences in the usual speed ranges (0-60, etc)?
I have a couple of full race vintage racers with street plates, the fastest of which is a
1953 Kurtis with an aluminum chevy (570 hp and 2300 lbs). That car is a handful on the street. I'm curious what the X50 will feel like in comparison.

Not trying to burst anyones bubble who have ordered the upgraded horsepower from Porsche, but for the same money or less you could have a tuner give you 500 to 550 hp. I know that it would not come from the factory and not backed by Porsche and yada yada yada, but if I spend $17,000.00 I am looking for more than 35 hp. Just my opinion.
Same thing goes for the Porsche navigation system. For $3500.00 you are getting a CD ROM navigation (old school) when for around $2500.00 you can get a DVD (new school) navigation system from your local stereo shop. (It can talk to you too!)
Anyhow, different strokes for different folks I know. Just my very humble opinion!
I love my 996 turbo it has to be the best car
built on the planet.

Jack, The Fiske wheels on your 993TT are beautiful (so's the rest of the car). Are you putting them on your 996 and do you know where there is a photo of a 996TT with those wheels. I'm thinking of putting them on mine but would love to see them on one first.
