Quite franly, if it's been in the country that long, it should have been converted already. Basically, you have to take it to a DOT approved auto importer/converter. They take it, inspect it, and determine what changes need to be done in order for it to meet U.S. DOT standards. This may include things as simple as changing light lenses, and can be as intense as re-working the emissions system, suspension height, and/or passenger restraint systems, among other things.

On a late-model car such as the 996, I doubt that it needs to have much done to it conversion wise, but I really don't know for sure. It's reasonable for the buyer to be prepared to pay anywhere from $5000-$15000 for the "Amerification" of the car.

If someone else knows more, please share.

I assume that the warranty is void for such vehicles. As such, does anyone know if a third party vendor would provide a warranty for the vehicle?
